"Good. I hope that together we can set right some of the wrongs done in the past. I hope that we will be good friends, Leyton, truly. Perhaps you can teach me something of the West." Leyton nodded. "I am not as well versed in it's recent doings as you might like, having been in the stepstones for much of the past decade, yet I do have some knowledge of the culture and nobility of the Lannister court."

"Oh good. We must all use our skills and knowledge to best advantage. I'm just sorry I didn't have the chance to speak with you more often in the Stepstones. Duty, alas."
Gwayne sighed.
"Besides, it's not the done thing to interfere between a lord and his squire. The Lannisters might not have taken it well."

That I learnt at a young age."

"And you are much the better for it." Gwayne drained his cup. "Better to learn duty first and pleasure later, perhaps, than learn pleasure first and duty late, or never. I believe that's one reason why sons of noble houses are so often sent away. Another household is unlikely to be too lenient with a child, than some parents might be. I'll have to be thinking about having my own children soon, when I've found a wife."
He didn't mention his mistress and bastard sons, not sure if Leyton knew about them.

I had not thought of my service in such a light, yet what you say rings true." Leyton did not mention Aurane's sexual obsessions. In truth they had served to make him even more chaste than before. "Is there a particular lady you have in mind, if you do not mind my asking?"

"One," Gwayne admitted. "But I cannot reveal her name yet. I suspect I will have a better idea of the lady's intentions by the tourney. At the very least, I will know my hopes are doomed if she does not attend. If she does attend, well, my hope is that she will grant me her favour. Beyond that, i really cannot say yet. It's much too soon to know if the lady holds me in the same regard as I hold her."
He poured more juice from a pitcher.
"Ah, Leyton, I envy you. You are just coming into manhood. You will have time to please yourself soon enough - unless it comes to war again - and I must think about being responsible, taking a wife and fathering children. And protecting the Far Reach. That above all."

"I have never sought pleasure beyond my duty, and I do not foresee myself doing so. As for the lady you speak of, I can see no reason for her not to attend. Surely you are doubting your qualities overmuch."

"Even duty requires a respite," Gwayne said with a laugh. "Most men find a woman's company a solace when they have been in the training yard, riding their lands, or sitting in judgement all day long. You'll find that soon enough, I expect. The problems start only when a man allows a woman to get between him and his duty, and I know you'd never do that."
He sighed.
"The lady who has won my admiration is not going to be easy to catch, unfortunately. I thank you for my faith in me, but it is not as simple as that. She may have to put other duties first."

Leyton frowned, unable to think of a lady who fit the characteristics described by Gwayne. He decided to let it go. "A woman's company should not be solace." he replied. "The solace should be the knowledge that in training you have improved your ability to perform your duties." (OOC: Sorry for the delay, was typing a scenario.)

"I'm no Baratheon to father bastards on half a dozen women, but nor am I a septon. You've not known love, then, Leyton?" OOC - no problem. I am so bored I should write some but I have no inspiration!

Clearly Gwayne had never met Nymeria, who had been the only girl of relatively similar age Leyton had been exposed to for much of his youth. "No. The only lady I have ever been on good terms with is Teirney Lannister, and she left Casterly Rock almost immediately after my arrival. I spent my time at Casterly Rock performing my duties or training with Damon Lannister." (OOC: I had it easy, I used Leyton's vigil.)

"I am not acquainted with Tierney Lannister," Gwayne admitted. "What is her relationship to the Lannisters? I fear my knowledge of the house is not intimate. But that is...interesting. Most boys experience love in some form or other."
He frowned, drank some more juice.
"Leyton, I hope you will not think me crass, but have you ever...known a woman?"
He seemed uncomfortable as he spoke. It was not a question he commonly asked his relations.
OOC - cool! I could do something with the war I suppose but don't fancy it right now!

Leyton did not pick up on the conclusions Gwayne was beginning to come to about his sexual inclinations. "She is the eldest daughter of Lord Aurane." Leyton replied simply, answering the question. "She was one of the children taken as wards of the king." He frowned at the second question, considering his answer for a moment. "No, I have not." he eventually replied stiffly. "My views on the matter of pre and extramarital...knowledge...of ladies were often in sharp contrast with those of my former master, and despite his best efforts to convince me that he was doing no wrong, his...wanderings...only served to reinforce my beliefs on the matter."

Gwayne listened carefully, trying to understand. He'd always liked women, and had bedded his first, a chambermaid, on the eve of his fifteenth birthday. He could not imagine not being attracted to women, nor not desiring the companionship and love he experienced when he could spare the time to be with Violet.
"That is...understandable," he said at last, when Leyton was finished. "A licentious lord is not the best recommendation, it's true. But I beg you not to turn against female companionship until you've experienced such things for yourself. Perhaps it will surprise you that I am quite the romantic, Leyton. I am no Lannister, but I have always believed in the power of love. The purity of two hearts entwined, is that not a goal worth achieving?"

"And you believe that a man must engage in such acts to feel love?" Leyton looked unimpressed. "That is hardly the stuff that our legends would have us believe, nor is it the path that our gods would have us choose. I am not against love, I am simply against that manner of love."
