Leyton arrived, and bowed before Gwayne. "Lord Hightower, you wished to speak to me?"
Leyton was garbed in a green tunic over top of which was a red surcoat.

Gwayne smiled. "Please, let's not be so formal, cousin. Call me Gwayne, if you will. And have a seat."
He motioned to the seat opposite.
"I wanted to offer my congratulations on attaining your knighthood. But it's time we talked about your future. I have been hoping you will come home."

"Very well, my...er...Gwayne." Leyton replied correcting himself. He took a seat in the offered chair. "I simply question whether the Hightower is indeed my home, Gwayne. I have spent more of my life at Casterly Rock."

"Yes. That was neither your choice nor mine," Gwayne sighed, frowning. "It was something duty demanded of you, and by all accounts you did it very well. But you are not a lion. I would offer you a place at my side, as befits my cousin. Gareth has been granted a keep in the Stepstones and may not always be able to keep his place beside me. And Lancel is...well, he lives in a world of his own. He has led too sheltered a life at Oldtown. Not like us. We have seen the world, Leyton. I want my cousin to take up his rightful place as my friend and companion. If you will accept."

I do not know you half so well as those I grew up with in the Westerlands. I understand that there is truth in your words, yet what you ask of me will surely determine the course of much of the rest of my life. Have you given any thought to what roles you would have me fill? Surely my entrance into your household will displace another servant, one who has served you better than I in these past few years. That, to me, seems rather unjust." Leyton replied, respectfully.

"I would never displace anyone ho has served me loyally and well," Gwayne replied at once. "I simply meant to offer you a place as one of my household knights, and, in time, that can be changed as needed. You are very young and it would take time for you to become accustomed to a new home and new duties. But I don't believe a lord must have only a set number of knights, and the Hightower is well able to maintain you."

"Of course," Gwayne said. "Unless you would prefer to remain at the manse tonight? There's plenty of room."

"Thank you," Gwayne replied. "I'm to host a tourney soon, so I would love for you to attend, and compete if you see fit."

"That I can promise you I will do." Leyton agreed. "As a newly made knight it is only right that I compete." "Excellent. I will be travelling home as soon as matters are finished here. You could travel with me. I know the rest of the family will be pleased to see you." He grinned at Leyton. "I'll have the servants make up a bed for you for the remainder of your time in the city. And we'll talk about your future when you're ready. Just remember, you've served the lions for these past few years, but you're not a lion. They won't forget that, so why should you?"

"Because without them, I have no pride." Leyton replied, implying both meanings of the word. He would truly be friendless in the Hightower, initially at least. "Lord Aurane knighted me; that I can never forget. But I will think on your offer, perhaps, in time, I shall be able to forge new foundations in Oldtown."

I did," Gwayne replied. "By your logic, cousin, I ought to have remained at Horn Hill, or else never left. I'd be a piss poor lord of the Hightower if I was never there, wouldn't I?" He drank some wine. "It's common for sons of a noble house - and sometimes daughters - to go away from home to learn new things and meet new people, but they are usually meant to come home again. I'd hate to lose you to the Lannisters, I truly would. Were it up to me, you'd never have left. But that was not my decision to make."
