Gareth looked up at the battlements to where he could see guards.
"Ho there!" he called. "I am Ser Gareth Hightower returned home from the war in the Stepstones with my brother's men. We request entry."

"Welcome home, ser! Open the gates!" The head of the sentry duty was a grizzled man at arms who had grown up with Lord Lothar. The gates swung open at his command.

Gareth gave the man a jaunty wave and signalled to his own men to move through the gates.
The young Hightower dismounted as soon as he entered the courtyard. Handing the reins of his horse to a stableboy, he asked a guard as to whether his mother and other members of his family were at the Hightower. Upon hearing the affirmative, he went to find them.

Gareth rode in behind his brother and sister. He dismounted from his horse with some gladness. A log sea journey had made him thankful to be finally back on solid land that didn't roll and slide.

As the heir to the Far Reach, it was Gareth Hightower who was there to greet the Queen at the gates and escort her to his brother.
Dismounting from his horse, Gareth dropped to one knee.
"Your Grace." the young lord said. "On behalf of my brother Lord Gwayne, may I welcome you and your entourage to our fair city."

Lord Commander Stark barked, "You can welcome the Queen by not impeding our progress. Back on your horse and lead on you fool."

Without moving a step, Gareth slowly turned his head to stare at the man who had spoken to him. He looked the Lord Commander up and down and smiled insolently at him, before turning his gaze back to the Queen.
"Your servant needs to develop some manners, Your Grace." he said loudly enough for the man to hear. "It is fortunate he is here in the Far Reach. We of course are known for our courtesy and good manners. Perhaps, if you like, as hosts, we can teach your servant some of those while he is our guest."

Lord Commander Stark dismounted and walked toward Gareth, and backhanded the man across the face. Gareth tumbled back. When he was clear of the way, Stark barked out, "Get the queen to the Hightower, and watch those roofs for archers. I do not want another incident like on the Hill."

Gareth had suffered harder blows in the heat of battle. He quickly picked himself up, spat a glob of blood on the ground in disgust and turned to the Queen.
"Is this how you allow one of your hosts to be treated, Your Grace?" he demanded. "This is an insult to House Hightower and the Far Reach."

Lord Bayard Royce arrives at Oldtown with the chivalry of the Vale. Young Ser Josiah Corbray is eager to prove himself worthy as the sworn shield of the Lord of the Vale, while old Ser Gunther Belmore is eager for one last chance at glory.
A less reputable group follows in their wake. The Knights of the Flagon fought in the Stepstones war, but they did so as mercenaries, and disreputable ones at that. Ser Crawley the Crawfish Knight is a man of large talk but small deeds, while Ser Matthos Keath is all anger with no chivalry. It seems both are willing to compete for the significant prize, no matter what their reputations might be.

"You think your brother has your back, Garnet." Rickon replied. "Stop delaying the queen, and get back inside. Know your place." He buried his finger into Hightower's chest.

"The Queen is safe with Ser Gareth," Lord Bayard says. His blind eyes are at once nonjudgmental, yet seem to disapprove. "There is no greater knight in the Reach, nor the realm."
