"ER...thanks, I think. But you can't tell girls like Lynesse that. Well, you might be able to. I couldn't. I expect they laugh at me, you know."

"So what if they laugh," Finn replied, "knock them down, that'll teach 'em. And I suspect Sapphire might even respect you for it, given how she tackled her brother at the banquet."

Mariya frowned at him.
"But...girls don't fight! Not usually, anyway. Won't they call me a bully if I punch them and knock them down?"

"If they don't fight, why do you spend so much time in the training yard?" Finn asked.

She had to laugh at that.
"Fair point, Finn. I'm not like most girls, as you said. But other girls don't fight. Normal girls I mean. Unless you know something I don't about Sapphire and Lynesse?"
She grinned mischievously.

Finn shook his head, "I know a lot of people give you grief about it, but I don't see the point. Why be the only one without a sword?" He shrugged, "Seems sensible to me. And mouthing off to a girl who spends her time fighting with the boys just because you don't like the color of her dress seems foolish. Give one of them a good punch in the lip and they'll not have much to say about your choice of attire I think. And the whole not hitting women rule only applies to men anyway, so seems to me you're in an advantageous position."

"That's true. But don't you think they'll lock me up and beat me if I hit one of the other girls?" She asked. "And it would rather ruin the image of the sweet little girl who acts like a septa, wouldn't it? Some of them don't even know about my swordwork."

"Well if you are keeping secrets," Finn replied with a smile, "Then you just have to take the insults and smile about them. That's alright too, probably better in the long run."

"I suppose it is," she said. "But it still hurts, you know? I want to show them that I'm as good as them. Any idea how I can do that?"

"Well girls like that crave attention, positive or negative, it seems to me, so I'd go out of my way to not provide it," he said, "Collect some followers to laugh at YOUR jokes, and admire YOUR clothes. That'll show them." Finn suggested.

She grinned at that.
"I could do that, I suppose. If you'll help me. I'm sure I could help you with...um...something."

Finn nodded, "Alright, that seems like a deal," he said in agreement.

Mariya was still smiling, having started to feel much better.
"Thank you. There must be something you want from life, Finn. Everybody wants something."

"Of course there is," Finn replied with a nod.

"Maybe one day you'll feel comfortable enough to tell me what it is," she said. "But I won't press you now. May I offer you my thanks for listening to me?"
