I thought he could still be a live but a prisoner of some Clan. Maybe Moon Men if you don't mind. Could be a thing with Magnus returning to his old clan.

Like no one else believes him to be alive so they made Alaric be Lord. At the end of the quest line I took it that the Lord dies somehow as well.
