Hmmh yes they are some ncie maps. About the 'Big Daddy' is that Miles scale quite right? Martins says Weteros is about the size of South America after all. And I've always wondered, suppose we'll find out eventually, does the land beyond the wall eventually lead to an artic pole or is there something else up there.

What I like is how we know so little about the rest of the world, and this is only a small part.

Back in the middle ages Europe barely knew anything about Asia or Africa, let alone any lands across the sea. That's not true at all. The Silk road was WELL established by the time of the third crusade at the end of the 1100s, and many people in europe, at least the nobility, knew about the huge breadth of the nation of Islam, which stretched from Gibraltar to the Euphrates. They knew India was there, but it was really too far to get to in any reasonable amount of time. Plus, the Vikings discovered the Americas in like 1000 AD

The America's werent offically discovered; nor was the concept full concieved until the 1500's~.
But yeah, Silk Road WAS developed, and knowledge of Africa was known in Europe since before A.D.
Maybe the full scope of the land wasn't known, nor Oceana, but they knew the world went on... to some degree.

Just as you two have said, there WAS a silk road, and they KNEW about Asia... Just like Westeros knows about the Free Cities etc. However, not much more was known, just like Westeros doesn't know a whole lot about the Khalasars etc.

The Free Cities are much like Italian city-states (Milan) and sea-oriented republics (Venice, Genoa, Amalfi, Pisa) and people from Westeros know a lot about them, as the kings and nobles of England, Spain (Castille) and France knew about Italy. However, Westerosi know only a bit about cities such as Qarth or Vaes Dothrak.
This is, of course, just my opinion, but I based it on historical facts

We can't compare the geography of Westeros being England to Free Citires being Eastern Europe.

Well, Westeros is supposed to be loosely based, geographicly and historicaly on Britian so we can. Anyway, Europeans dident really know about SubSaharan Africa or the Far-East back then, so thats last the Red Lands and all that.

Not only Britain. GRRM said he took aspects from many different cultures.
The War of the Roses was one of the only solid influences on the history.
But yeah, I'm agreeing that it relatively the same if not less knowledge in Westeros as it was in 1000~ A.C. Europe.
