“Have you caught anything yet?” Darryn asked somewhat peevishly.
“It takes as long as it takes, Darryn” Percy replied with a yawn. The pair sat under a large oak tree by a small stream near the Rose Road, their horses tied up in its branches, trying to stay cool in the heat.
Percy lay with his back against the trunk, with one bare leg resting atop his knee, gently moving his foot and the fishing rod and line balanced across it. They’d been sitting there for over 2 hours in an attempt to catch breakfast and it was soon about to become their lunch instead. Darryn sat next to him, hot and flustered with his skin starting to redden in the sun. “Let’s just go to the inn up the road and get some food there!” he moaned impatiently. Percy hid a smile and shook his head “We only have enough coppers for a few ales or some food and I’m working up a powerful thirst” he smacked his dry lips together. “You shouldn’t have spent the last of your money on those weeds at the last town. I couldn’t believe how much you paid for them. I thought you were supposed to be good with money?” he said with a grin.
Darryn huffed “Those weeds were healing herbs nearly out of season and they’ll fetch a pretty penny when we get to Kings Landing” he replied. Percy shrugged “Well they’re not much help to us here though, eh? So you’ll have to wait for your…” the rod jerked suddenly out of his lap and Percy scrambled to catch it as it began to skitter down the bank. He caught up with it and gave a quick heave with his muscled shoulders as he stood up. In the stream below a quick flash of silver & yellow flexed and broke the surface. “A trout. Big one too” Percy grunted as he wrestled with his catch. Darryn got to his feet with a wince as his sunburnt neck scratched against his clothing. He watched as his friend worked his line, slackening then tightening, wearing his prey down as it struggled to break free. “I told you this was a good spot” Percy said casually as he began to reel in the swiftly tiring fish. With a practised flick of the wrist, the exhausted creature flopped onto the bank, gasping. In a flash, Percy was next to it, pinning it to the ground and carefully removing the barbed fishing hook from its mouth. “Get a fire ready. Looks like we’re having trout for lunch” Percy said with a smile as he examined his prize.

With their bellies full, the pair made their way into the inn. They’d washed up a little in the stream and looked more respectable and a little less like vagabonds. After ordering 2 mugs of ale from the proprietor, Percy took a long swig, sighing in satisfaction before passing the other mug (somewhat regretfully) to Darryn, who sipped at it and pulled a face. “This stuff is dreadful – I think the horse trough water would taste better”. Percy downed his with a mighty gulp and burped loudly. “Does that mean you’ll not be wanting the rest of yours then? You need to be less fussy when you don’t know where your next ale is coming from” he laughed as he took a swallow from the other ale.
“Anyway, who’s this fellow we’re to meet in Kings Landing then?”
“Maester Unwyn said he was called Jarin Flowers, some wine trader I think. He requested for some help with his operation and needed someone who could count without taking off his socks. Anywhere is better than going back to Redding Hill” he said glumly. “That sounds boring. Where’s the fun to be had in that?” Percy replied distractedly, taking another gulp of ale as he eyed the ample rump of the serving wench. “Is the pay good?”
“How would I know? I haven’t even met him yet!” Darryn replied with annoyance “And besides I…”
“Hey you!” a gruff voice said behind him before roughly hauling him off the chair with one meaty hand. Darryn turned round in surprise to see a large farmer with straw coloured hair glaring at him. “Yer in my seat!” he said, flecks of his spit striking Darryn in his face as he spat out his words. Darryn began to stammer some sort of apology when he saw Percy rise to his feet with a broad smile and say “Your seat? Are you sure you don’t belong outside with the horses, you certainly have their stink!” he laughed loudly at his own jest.
The man’s face purpled with anger and he dropped Darryn and swung to face Percy.
“What did yer say, you motherless son of…” was as far as he got before Percy’s right cross smashed into his nose, breaking it with an audible snap and causing the man to squeal in agony. He fell to his knees clutching his bleeding face as Percy grinned at Darryn. “Well, that was easy!” he said with a grin as Darryn groaned in resignation. “I think we’d better get out of here before…”
“That bas’ard hit Fel ‘e did! Broke ‘is bleedin nose!” the wench squealed in a high-pitched and grating voice which nearly drowned out the scraping of chair legs as half the occupants of the bar rose to their feet. “Seems some liddle lordlings wanna play games eh?” a large man said at the back of the inn as he rose to his feet. “I fink we should play as well” he cracked his knuckles as he lumbered across towards them, followed by about 3 of his large friends.
Percy glanced over his shoulder at Darryn for a brief second saying, “See, now I bet you can’t have this much fun in Kings Landing” laughing as he blocked the big man’s first punch and retaliated with two of his own double-quick into his opponent’s stomach, forcing his air out with a whoosh before his friends launched in as well.

Sitting aside their horses later that night heading up the Rose Road towards Kings Landing, Darryn used his tongue to feel a loose tooth in his jaw and scowled across at Percy, wincing as his bruised face let him know how it felt about the gesture. Percy; with a swollen cheek, black eye and arm in a sling grinned back, before wincing himself, and said “Now, how was I to know that the wench would join in too. You should be happy she used an empty bottle to hit you with after you hit her fiancé with a stool” he laughed.
“I’m not thpeaking to you again until we reach Kingth Landing” Darryn replied mushily and groaned as his cracked ribs joined in the general cacophony of pain he was in.
