Steffon Baratheon arrives, seeking an audience with the Master of Laws. He is presumably followed by Milo Bettley's six goons.

He is granted access.

Steffon had gotten quite good at ignoring the goons, so he took a seat in one of the chairs and looked at his brother. "Maekar, could I perhaps trouble you for a glass of wine? I left my flask in Lannisport, and discussion of crime and punishment is thirsty buisness."

Maekar gave Steffon a questioning look as six additional men followed him into the room.

"Bettley's goons," he said, by way of explanation. "Apparently he thinks Daeron might send someone after me," he added, rolling his eyes.
"That is actually what I wanted to speak with you about," Steffon said. He turned around to look at the men behind him, and then back to his brother. "The big one in the back, and the one on the left threw one of my knights off the battlements and I desire justice for his death."

"Daeron might send someone after you? One of your knights thrown off the battlements?" he asked confused. "Perhaps you should start from the beginning, Steffon."
He rose and poured two wines for himself and Steffon, then settled himself again to listen.

A young page, perhaps eight years old, wearing the King's livery enters the room.
"Forgive me, message for you your grace," He says, bowing, and offering up a scroll to Maekar.

Maekar took the message.

Dear Brother, I wanted to say how pleased I have been with the job you are doing as Master of Laws. Things have been more orderly then in any time in my recent memory, and I think we have your hard work to thank for that.
That said, I am announcing that Prince Trystane Martell will be taking over as Master of Laws, and taking the position on the Small Council. I am sure you understand that this is not a reflection on your abilities in the least, nor in my trust in you, but rather a necessary gesture of friendship towards one of our Lords. We will continue to look for a position suitable to your tastes, and I'd be glad to discuss the matter at some time in the future, if you request an appointment with my scheduler.
Your loving brother,
Daemon (of House Targaryen, King of .....etc)

Maekar eyes shifted to the guards who had accompanied Steffon after he read the letter. He kept his expression neutral. He took quill and parchment and began penning a reply.
Daemon,
I understand of course, it is not in me to question your decisions. I will speak immediately with Prince Trystane about transferring the duties of my position to him to allow for a seamless transition. You have honoured me by allowing me to be in your service, and if there is any other task you would have of me you have only to ask.
Your ever loyal servant, Maekar
He rolled the parchment up and handed the note to the page and told him to return to the king with it.
He looked at Steffon, "it would seem I have been relieved of my position. You will have to bring this matter to Prince Trystane Martell, the new Master of Laws."

Steffon barked out a mirthless laugh. "I suppose Justice will become a rare commodity in the soon. I will take my leave of you, then, brother," he said standing to leave.

"There is one thing I would like to speak to you about, Steffon," Maekar said, "also concerning Prince Trystane."
"To end the problems between Dorne and the Stormlands I proposed to him that you and he would undertake a joint venture into Lord Wyl's lands to search out the Vulture King. Would you be interested in this?"

Steffon nodded. "I can do that, provided I am allowed to leave court with my head still on my shoulders. Bettley's ordered me to testify against Daeron for some plot against the King, I imagine these goons are to ensure I do not leave court prematurely, as well as to ensure my safety."

"Daeron is suspected of a plot against the king? Lord Bettley has been busy indeed. Very well, I will speak to Prince Trystane to arrange this."
