Joanna cosnidered that carefully for a minute or two.
"Then what? You must surely see that people will stare and laugh and point at her when she grows older if something is not done."

"An... eye patch? I can not say your grace. It is possible that the muscles may heal on their own, but I can not say."
"The Sages..." says Runestone's maester.
"The sages are frauds, nevermind that," says the King's maester, "As I said, your grace there is not much that can be done. Would you like us to attempt to move the child's eye into a straight forward position?"

Joanna#s mind had been busy in thought all the time.
"No. That would hurt her too much. Perhaps there is something we can do to help. If my idea does not work, then an eyepatch will have to do and we'll say she lost sight in that eye."
She looked directly at the King's maester.
"What if we made Silvana wear a patch on her other eye for a while? Would it then be possible that it would force the damaged one to work correctly?"

"Uh... I do not think you can trick muscles into healing your Grace. It seems most unlikely, but if you wish we may try."

"We should try," Joanna insisted.
She gathered Silvana to her and held the little girl against her heart.
"i will not allow my baby to suffer more than she must. If there is a chance of helping her we must take it."

"As you say," The King's maester bows his head, "By your leave your grace?"

"Of course. Do whatever you can to help my daughter. You will be rewarded if you can set her to rights once more."

The man departed rapidly, leaving the Runestone maester behind.
"I am sorry your grace." He said softly.

"I know. I am too."
She regarded him carefully.
"What was it you were going to say about the Sages?"

"The sages of the College... they have different methods. They may be able to help. They are always experimenting with the human body, learning new things. But they may not be inclined to help. They... do not wear chains, and their motives are not always to serve."

"What sort of enticements could we use to get their assistance?" Joanna asked. "Gold, perhaps? Or Royal favour?"

"Neither thing interests them your grace," the maester replies, "They are interested only in knowledge, for its own sake, and the more forbidden the better."

"I don't have any knowledge for them," Joanna fretted. "Is it hopeless then?"

"I do not know, you'd have to speak with them your grace... Just be wary as you do so," the maester said.

"I will, of course. I must remain here for now, though. Will you send them a letter if I write? I cannot leave Runestone at present."
