The girl shrugs in obvious disbelief, as if Robert had just told her that he had wings and could fly.

Robert laughed, "maybe one day I will show you it, and you will be sorry you ever doubted such an honourable knight."

The girl cocked her head to the side again.
"Maybe. If your brother comes back with his promises."

"Oh he will come back, of that, at least, I'm sure. I just hope he does it right."
"Is that what you'd fancy? Leaving this village and seeing all the wonders of this world?"

The girl shrugged her shoulders. "There is no place better than here in all the Vale. Every Clan envies our village."

"I'm sure every clan does, but beyond the mountains, no one cares about the clans and their villages. They care about big castles made of stone and giant cities. They don't come here because it's of no use to them. I could show you a castle that sits at the peak of one of the tallest mountains in all the Vale. No army can conquer it. Far away to the north, many leagues from the Vale, there is a wall that stretches from sea to sea. And from the bottom you cannot see the top. And it is made completely of ice. I've never seen it myself, but everyone knows of it."

She laughs, "You are like an old woman with dried up milk-tits, telling your tales," she chuckles.

He chuckles too, "well, if you don't want to believe me it's no bother to me. I'll be returning to it all soon enough anyway, and you can go on thinking this village is the greatest fort there is."

She frowned, "You think it is a bad village?"

"Well, and this may be the severe beating talking here, but I can't say that I'm not looking forward to leaving."

She frowned deeper, apparently genuinely offended.
"I wouldn't want to live in your stupid stone walls," she said, standing, and kicking his water pail over before exiting the hut.

"Stupid savage," he mumbled after she left, looking at the water all over the ground. He turned over and went back to sleep.

The next morning the girl is back, with another bowl of soup and another hunk of bread. She squats and watches him eat it.

He chews and watches her too.
"Are my eating habits peculiar?" he asks with a grin, chomping on a piece of bread.

"No." She replied, still watching him.
