Jaehaerys tried hard not to show his surprise.
"To my knowledge I have only mentioned my accomplishments once. And supposedly it was my former position and accomplishments that made me such a desirable candidate for Braavos. Much was made of that.
"You also mistake my request Lord Blackwood. Dragonstone would not belong to me. I am not asking to be Lord of Dragonstone as Kit Kidwell was Lord of Dragonstone. Quite rightly Steffon or Avery have a claim to be Lord of Dragonstone. Avery is only 15. Steffon is 23, but I'm told Steffon likes to court girls and play at being a courtier. In any case Liston Hogg has been the castellan of Dragonstone in the past, has he not?
"I'm also unaware that I have offered any insult to Lord Bettley. And as I have already told you, he terminated our meeting, not I. And you have influence with Lord Bettley. You could well nominate me for some sort of position, even if not for Dragonstone.
If not Dragonstone, then as the Hand of the King what would you suggest?

"I did nominate you for a position, Lord Velaryon -- to treat with the Sealord of Braavos. But that ship has sailed. I do not see what else I should give you."

Jaehaerys sighed.
"Lord Bettley made it clear that I would not be conducting any negotiation with the Sealord of Braavos. That was reserved for another. He refused to divulge the identity of that person. That I can accept."
He paused before continuing.
"I explained clearly to Lord Bettley the limits of my experience in Braavos. Lord Bettley was also reluctant to explain the role that I was to have or exactly why I was to be involved. Had it been made clear what my role was to be then perhaps I would have acquiesed.
"Yet I'm the one accused of being evasive and stubborn."
Jaehaerys leaned back in his seat again. He ran a hand through his long silver hair.
"My lord Blackwood, I can only explain my position yet again. I am a commander of men, not a negotiator. I have also some ability at sea both in sailing warcraft and in naval strategy. I ask for some sort of position reflective of my status and abilities. Negotiating in Braavos is not in my view reflective of my abilities. Perhaps you are reluctant to accomodate my request because you will be seen as giving in to someone who has defied your nomination in the matter of Braavos. Your nomination of me for such a position I was unaware of."
He paused again.
"However I would be grateful - and more importantly loyal - to those that assist me. You speak of Dragonstone as belonging by right to the King's uncles. That is so. However is it better that one of the King's uncles be given Dragonstone either as lord or castellan, especially after their brother is executed on Lord Bettley's orders? Surely their loyalty to the Lord Regent will be somewhat questionable. Is it better that a man loyal to you - and grateful - with abilities well suited to being castellan be given such a position?"

Horas sighs. "You speak of loyalty, Lord Jaehaerys, but yours is still unproven. It is my understanding that you missed most of the battle of King's Landing and refused to march with the rest of the Crownlands host."

Lord Irwyn is let in.

"Lord Hand," Alexander says, "the Northern Army marches home and the Roose boy has agreed to come to King's Landing."

Jaehaerys spread his hands.
"I had not received any specific orders or requests from Lord Grafton or Lord Barclay. Lord Barclay had requested 1,200 men from Driftmark and these had been sent before my arrival there. I had to wait at Duskendale for the extra 800 men I had raised to arrive from Driftmark. While I was aware that the army was moving at some point to Kings Landing, I had not received specific orders as to when or who I was to march with. As soon as my re-inforcements arrived I moved to Kings Landing. My ships joined the Crownlands Fleet.
"It was also I who rallied many of the Valesmen and Riverlanders who were fleeing from the battle."
"As I have stated before, I am very willing to demonstrate my loyalty in a position suited to my abilities."

Horas shrugs. "I will speak with Lord Bettley further on the matter. A council of lords is to be held soon in King's Landing. Perhaps we can find some position for you by then, but I will make no promises on the matter."

"Good," Horas says to Alexander, "You have done well, Lord Irwyn."

Jaehaerys stood and gave a short bow towards Lord Blackwood in acknowledgment. A thick strand of his long silvery-gold hair fell forward momentarily obscuring his face. He brushed it out of his face impatiently.
"I thank you for that Lord Blackwood."
Jaehaerys' violet eyes, a vestige of his Valyrian lineage, met Lord Horas' eyes.
"I can also assure you my lord Blackwood that should such a position be found for me then I would endeavour to demonstrate my loyalty and gratitude. You may think me proud and stubborn, but I do not forget my friends."
Jaehaerys gave another short bow, before turning on his heel and striding out of the Hand's chamber.

Alexander nods, "Does his Lordship, know of any other tasks for the men of the Far Reach? If our services are no longer needed by The Lord Hand or the Lord Regent, I would like permission to march them home so that we can get a few more fall harvests in before winter."

Arerya is led into the Hand's spacious solar. Drinks and refreshments are laid out for the visitor.
Horas inclines his head to Arerya. "Greetings. I am Horas Blackwood, Hand of the King. I understand you come here on behalf of the Summer King?"

I understand you come here on behalf of the Summer King?" Arerya casually sips wine, from the same bottle that the Hand took his from, he eats nothing. "Yes, I come as a representative from my King, and speak with his authority." He sips wine, "For some time now the relations between your Seven Kingdoms and the Summer Isles has been cordial, but nothing has come of it. I am here to do something about it." He pulls out a piece of parchment, "I propose several things, including the creation of embassies in both Kings Landing and in the Summer Isles. I also propose a trade agreement, we have many things, including silks and jems, that your people want, and I am cetain that there is something you have that we may want." He sighs slightly, "And there is one final matter, that of a possible military alliance. My sources tell me that you are currently negotiating with the Braavosi. But such things can turn sour in an instant. I propose a simple thing, a agreement to aid each other should we come to war."
