Quentyn studied his reflection in the glass. He had grown a bit of stubble and planned to let his hair grow long as well. Gone were his courtier’s silks and the plain dark clothing he wore on quieter business, replaced with hard scuffed leather, a dinted pot helm, and a shirt of mail. A pair of bandoliers crossed over his chest, each bearing a dozen daggers of different shapes and sizes. A short sword rested on one hip and a small steel buckler on the other. Quentyn thought he looked rather dashing as a sellsword; certainly he could pass for one in Braavos. “What do you think?” he asked.
Bannen was leaning back in a chair, throwing an apple up in the air and catching it again and again. “Just because you look the part doesn’t mean you can fight,” he replied.
That was true enough, but Quentyn had been practicing. He had sparred with Bannen on the banks of the Blackwater outside the city walls, and he knew he was improving. But while he was proud of the improvements he had made with his dagger work, he was much prouder of the way his fledgling network of informants had come together.
Jym Blackberry, Quentyn’s second in command, dug up a particularly nasty bit of blackmail on the owner of a classy brothel and forced him to sell his property for a fraction of what it was truly worth. Quentyn used his connections in the Watch to get good deals on a few profitable riverfront properties. Even Bannen had helped, breaking a few bones of a particularly uncooperative owner. No one said this business was pretty. And with the money Quentyn’s new properties made, he hired informants and knives and all other sorts of useful people.
He still had little in the way of a formal network outside of King’s Landing, but that could wait. He was bound for Braavos, and he had a murderer to hunt down.
