Marianne just gave Joanna a strange look.
"I cannot tell you. I would be breaking the trust that he placed in me. I just know that this cannot be resolved. Steffon is mad at me Joanna."

Joanna winced. She had no idea what her sister was talking abut when she said she could not speak of whatever the problem was but she still sympathised, especiall since Steffon was angry.
"I can't say I'm surprised. I wish you could tell me what the problem was, though. Apart from Steffon. I mean, if Lord Wylde can confide in you about things, why can you not marry him?"

Marianne looked a little pained but Wylde had asked her not to say anything about his... persuation.
"Because it wouldnt be good Joanna, for either of us. I wish that you, Steffon and Ser Tybolt could see that! Steffon is just so angry he refuses to talk to me, and I havent seen Ser Tybolt or Lord Oscar since Oscar and I talked."

"I want to understand," Joanna said. "How can I do that if you are unable to explain the situation? I won't be angry with you, I promise, but it's hard to know how to help without the truth."

"I cant say." She said biting on her lip. "He asked me not to, he would become a mockery to everyone. I doubt even his own brother would understand."

For a moment Joanna simply stared. She coudln't believe that anyone would judge their own sibling so harshly.
"Why could he tell you if not his own brother?"

Marianne stood up and put her hand against her head as if she had a headache.
"It can go no further Joanna, promise me."

"Of cousre."
Joanna spoke without hesitation. She dearly loved her sister and hated to see her hurt.
"You know I am on your side in this."

Marianne seemed to take time in deciding what to say.
"I...uh... he prefers to be in the company of others, i mean he prefers the companionship of other men."

Joanna took that the more common way.
"A lot of men do. They like to keep their women in separate compartments from the rest of their life and spend all their time with their male friends. The trick is to teach them that yur company is valuable to them."

"I do not mean it like that." Marianne said, determindly not meeting her sisters eyes.

Realisation struck. Joanna said nothing for a moment as she considered that. She'd known there were men who practiced such things but never had she expected that her own kin would come close to marrying one. It was her understanding that such men tended to hide their preferences.
"I see. That had not occured to me. Although...Wylde must like you if he told you that?"

Marianne shrugged.
"I think he told me to shut me up in truth. I asked him why he seemed to dislike me so."

"Oh. Does he dislike you then, or only the fact that you are a woman?"

"I dont know Joanna. His brother returned before we could talk about it, if he would have. He is a very private person."
