Rhaenys gave Ariel a sad look.
"How can you know? I think it would be foolish to deny the possibility without even ging the man a chance to prove himself worthy of your love. I myself hope that Selwyn and I will come to care for one another, in time."

Ariel shrugged. "My heart's already lost elsewhere, so it's not much of a chance. But if we don't come to love each other or delight in each other's company, respect shouldn't be difficult, and after the heir is born I can find him a pleasant mistress, and myself a paramour or three. It's not a difficult problem to solve."

"That's lucky. but you'd best make sure Ser Owen is happy with that arrangement, and you'll need two children by him first, at lesat one of them a son."

Ariel chuckled at Rhaenys. "You've been around your Andal of a husband far too long, coz. If I produce a female heir, I produce a female heir, and the best and brightest sons of the Westerlands can compete to win her hand in marriage. Unless Owen's invested his ego in a trueborn male heir, it'll work out fine."

Rhaenys shrugged.
"It is not I who objects to female heirs, Ariel, it is the realm. All women are expected to produce male heirs to rule their husband's, or in a few cases, their own, castle. It's the way of the world. You will face severe criticism if you don't even try to have more than one child."

Ariel smiled. "And I'm not now, Rhaenys?" she asked. "We'll see what Mother Rhoyne gives me, when the time comes. If I have girls rather than boys, or Owen can't sire a child upon me, then it's in the gods' hands; if I have sons instead, then everyone is happy. I'll do what needs to be done, never fear."

Rhaenys smiled. She had half-feared Ariel would not do her duty to spite her and was much relieved that didn't appear to be the case.
"Then thank you, I am glad of it. I may have the rule but my life would be even harder if those who support me did not do their duty also."

Ariel smiled. "Well, if it ever becomes too onerous for you..." she teased. "But no. We of Dorne may play the game of love by different rules, but even we know that we must continue our bloodlines. You need not worry for that. Just don't worry too much about the realm criticizing me. It will happen."

"You are more carefree than I," Rhaenys commented. "Then again, you have the leisure to be that way. I don't. I mean to take my marriage vows seriously."

Ariel opened her mouth in false shock. "Break my vow once given? Never!" She smiled widely. "I will swear to lie with no man other than my husband. And that's exactly what I'll do." She shook her head playfully, then looked at Rhaenys. "Much as I might like to bolster my image as a Dragon by taking two husbands, you sewed that option up, and I won't try to challenge your Act just for a trophy."

" If I'd been in a position to take two husbands I might have allowed it but it's not possible so you must be content with just the one husband. Ser Owen is handsome," Rhaenys commenteed. "I'm sure he'll please you well enough."

Ariel looked at Rhaenys and chuckled. "He's a Lannister," she responded, "of course he's handsome. He'll have his chance, I just have unusually high standards for one I would love. And you know that for desire, being male counts somewhat against him."

Rhaenys subjected Ariel to a long scrutiny.
"Yes. I believe you've said something of that nature before. I don't comprehend it, myself, but I don't wish to criticise."
She could not imagine being abed with a woman instead of a man.
"I don't think there are any laws against that, as there are against certain other things," she said nonchalantly.

Ariel shook her head. "Of course not," she responded. She looked at Rhaenys, and her mouth began to quiver with the desire to comment on the woman's face. She changed the subject quickly.
"At least we're nearly done with this war, that we have the time to worry about marriage and lovemaking and less bloody intrigues."

"Yes, and it will be a relief, but I don't expect all our troubles to die with the remaining Cultists. Every ruler, every man or woman of rank, must guard him or herself against enemies all their lives. It won't be all lemon cakes and fine silks in Kings Landing, Ariel," Rhaenys said soberly. "That is...unfortunate, but that's life for you. Happiness is fleeting for such as me, I know."
