"Then simply replace Kyma with Alysanne. You seem to be saying that the Lannister alliance is important. And if it is, why is Alysanne allowed to take a politically insignifcant husband?"

His tone set her teeth on edge.
"Because she loves him and because, if you had been listening earlier, you would have heard me say that I meant Euric to have Starfall. Martell refused to comply and I need him too much to cause offence. However, I had already agreed to the betrothal. It would have been cruel to refuse. Lannister may still consent to your marriage, Aegon, but why should we give him two Targaryens when one will suffice? He's done nothing to warrant our friendship. We ally with him for the realm, that's all."

Aegon sighed inwardly. Because she loves him.
"Very well Rhaenys. Princesses rarely marry for love and I believe you are doing our House a grave disservice by allowing Alysanne to marry whom she pleases, especially when the rest of us have to marry for political reasons. However that is your decision.
"If it please you then, if the marriage comes to pass, I would like you to consider a seat for myself and my new wife in accordance with our station. My nephew the Lord of Driftmark has agreed in principal for his sister to marry Oswell Tully. As such, I had thought to use Riverrun as a temporary base for myself and my men and work in conjunction with Tully's men in rooting out the Cultists who murdered my sister and nephew. After all I have no command position with the greater army and thought to use my men there. Tully will be a close relative as a result of the marrriage and I thought best to assist him first."

"An interesting suggestion," Rhaenys answered. "A little presumptuous, but it does have merit. If you marry the Lannister girl you shall have your own seat, but I do not know where. We'll find out in good time. However, I am worried about splitting our forces into too many parts. I am willing for you to widen your horizons with regard to command but you should speak with Lord Selwyn on the matter. He and I have already agreed to focus first on the Crownlands and the Mander. Selwyn is overall commander of my forces. He may be wiling to send men to the Riverlands or he may not. Ask him."

"Well given my experience, I consider I'm under-utilised. This is despite the fact that in the last three years I've fought well for you and your late mother. I've given you no reason to doubt my loyalty to you or House Targaryen, but you doubt it all the same. You seem to be overly quick in interpreting my plain speaking and my actions as your cousin, a royal prince and commander as disloyalty."

Milo strolls back into the tent and snickers. "Oh, I see Aegie decided to open his mouth in my absence."

Rhaenys rolled her eyes at Milo as he spoke.
"Indeed, ser."
She looked at Aegon.
"Cousin, I do not doubt your experience of battle command - I never have - but I agree that you have given me cause for concern. You do not mean to, I know, yet you are too quick to disagree with my policies. You do, furthermore, have a tendency to exceed your authority, such as in this matter of the Riverlands and your previous silence over the matter of your marriage. I would be happy to give you the opportunity of more responsibility if only I could be sure that you would not assume more authority than you possess. That is the very reason I have placed our kinswoman Ariel under arrest. As the victim of Ariel's intervention. I would hope you of all men would respect my concern with regard to other usurpations of power."

A look of surprise came over Aegon's face
"How have I exceeded my authority in the Riverlands? I have only passed through the Riverlands once on my way here."

She couldn't hide her exasperation.
"You suggested to Lord Tully that he let you use Riverrun as your base of operations. You had no authority to make that request of him. Why do you even need a castle to base yourself in? Your place is with the main army, unless Selwyn or I tell you otherwise."

Aegon could see the expresion on her face and was equally exasperated.
"I have already explained this and you yourself said the idea had merit. I had thought to use Riverrun as a temporary base for myself and my men and work in conjunction with Tully's men in rooting out the Cultists who murdered my sister and nephew. As I said, I have no command position with the greater army and thought to use my men there. When it was to happen had certainly not been decided.
"Tully plans to rebuild Riverrun and any such arrangement certainly would not have happend until then. The War against the Cultists will be for years, evne if you take their strongholds. I don't plan to be living in a tent five-six years from now.
"When a Lord comes to you to ask for a marriage and offers friendship and an alliance...in return for that marriage...and that's what Lord Tully offered, naturally I'm going to ask what he actually means by 'friendship' and 'alliance'. As any Lord arranging a marriage for one his close relatives has done since time immemorial."

Rhaenys shook her head.
"Your idea does have merit, Aegon, but you should have come to ask me first. That is the only significant problem here. the fact that you did not ask gives me some cause for concern. It may be possible. Tell me, though, how many men do yourself and Lord Tully have together? You have three hundredm I know, but I cannot recall how many Tully has."

Aegon looked in amazement at her. He had the fiery Targaryen temper of his forebears and he could feel it rising. He fought it down and spoke civilly, even though he couldn't disguise some trace of bitterness.
"So this idea has merit anyway, but because I didn't inform you at the very instant of a conversation held between myself and Tully after he approached me for a marriage alliance between himself and my niece...you condemn me for not telling you. And then you claim I have exceeded my authority in the Riverlands?
"How can I inform you of any such arrangement when I don't even know whether the betrothal will go ahead? If it doesn't... there is no arrangement and therefore nothing to mention."

"Oh of course, Lord Lannister's bidding seems to be unimportant." Milo said, stepping towards the tent flap. "Goodbye."

Although she was about to launch into another point in her argument with Aegon, Rhaenys heard Milo knew it would have to wait. She put her hand on his arm to prevent his exit.
"One moment, please. I am sorry you have had to hear my disagreement with my cousin. Let us forget that for a moment. Tell us, what does Lord Lannister want? Or..., if you prefer, you can tell me alone, and I will inform Aegon later."

Milo shrugged with disinterest, "I find it all very fascinating personally, but Lord Lannister rather thought that his concerns were the most pressing, and I thought it prudent to hurry back and tell him that your grace has other more important concerns."
