Talyn Thatcher is summoned to the Queen's tent.

Talyn limped into the tent after surrendering his weapons to the nearest Queensguard. He approaches the Queen, and with a great deal of pained effort, kneels.
"Your Grace." He says quietly, bowing his head, before looking up, the scare on his cheek red and angry against otherwise white skin.

She looked down at him.
"Ser Talyn. Your father told me I must call you brother now," she said.

Talyn bite his tongue slightly, "Dead traitors don't tell Queens what to do Your Grace." He said, "But what he says is true. The High Septon himself performed the ceremony, so I suppose we are legally wed and bed." He coughed slightly.

"I see."
She was thoughtful for a moment, frowning down at him.
"Get up, man. My recognising the marriage was a condition of the terms I made with your late father. If they hadn't been, I'd have insisted on having the marriage dissolved. You've put me in a damned awkward position with the Lannisters, Thatcher. I will expect you - and Kyma - to help me rectify that."

Talyn nodded, "I know... that this situation is awkward your grace," he says standing, with another wince, "I do not think that anyone expected what has occurred here, and we must do the best with what we have left. Tell me how I may serve."

"I will do, shortly. First I want you to understand the position I am in. I promised Lord Lannister and his heir, Ser Owen, that Kyma would wed Ser Owen if I had to drag her to the altar. I cannot do that now because it would be to break off a legal marriage plus it would mean violating the terms of my agreement with your father. I will not be so dishonourable. That being so, I must find another match between House Targaryen and House Lannister. You will have to help me in any way possible to see that the West is bound to me."

Talyn wasn't sure what "anyway possible" meant. "The West, your grace, or House Lannister? It maybe they are no longer one in the same. So much has changed. Maesters ruling cities, great houses extinct, houses once thought extinct now strong again. But give the order, and I will do my all in this."

"i do not wish to depose House Lannister so, for now, they are the West. With luck I will be able to keep them loyal and in place as Lords Protector of the West, but since I am forced to break my promise to Lord Tyberion, I must think of something new that will prove that I am honourable."
She sighed and looked hard at him.
"I cannot reveal my hand quite yet, though you may be able to guess at it. I am hoping you will be able to assist me, and, if you can't, perhaps you can persuade Kyma to do so? She may do oblige her husband where she will not oblige her sister. Besides, it seems that you will soon be a man of great influence in Westeros. I don't suppose your father told you of his plans for you?"

"He told me nothing your grace besides the issue of marriage. It was my great fear that he meant to have you and Kyma's other sisters murdered in some insane scheme," Talyn said, with some confusion.

"ANd make Kyma queen so you would be her consort and both of you his puppets," she finished for him. "Of course he did. It seems he was going to do it if I didn't agree to the terms he offered. Be that as it may, your father is dead now. You are Lord Thatcher. And...there's something else too. Under the terms of the treaty I made with your father, I am obliged to offer you the position of Lord Protector of the Mander."
Her green eyes bore into him. It was plain that she didn't want to make that offer but was compelled to do so.

Talyn's eyes grew very wide, "I.. your grace. I do not know how I could accept that. I do not deserve it, and it will infuriate many of your lords. It would cause you too much harm. I have already cost you the West, until we win it back, I can not cost you the Reach as well. I know that you may not wish your sister to be married to a pauper, but let us deny my father in this."

She stared at him in shock. Not many men she knew would turn down a plum like the Mander just because they would be hurting her cause. Then again, Aegon had turned down the Dornish alliance. Perhaps she knew men less well than she thought
"That is most generous of you, but I am prepared to uphold my deal with Lord Thatcher. Are you quite sure you wish to refuse? I'll not have you complaining about it later on. And what about Kyma? What will she say? She must be married to a man of rank."

Talyn shrugged, "I do not know what they would say your grace. If you make me accept, I will accept, and will be the best Lord paramount I can manage. But I think it will hurt your cause. But I believe I would serve you better in another capacity. My name will always make men hate and fear me, and they will not wish to serve me. With disloyal lords, the Mander would be useless to you."
