"Mine encouraged us to use both hands to begin with but I gave up using the other long ago. It seemed foolish to train with the hand I'd never used."
He laughed bitterly.
"Gods, what a stupid decision that was!"

"Then correct it. It is easy after a while, just like riding a horse... After the first few times you get used to it, only if you want to though. Its only you that holds yourself back."

"Aye, I know. I'll have to get back into it when I'm stronger. But what is your weapon, Mistress Ganieda? Mine is the axe so it will not serve if you wield a different weapon."

She gave him a look. "Clearly youve forgot where I come from Ser. I wouldnt call myself an Ironborn if I could not handle an axe."

"Well, I've never met an Ironborn woman before," Maekar said. "I would have thought a dagger was the most common weapon for a woman. Her Grace carries the sword blackfyre and her Queensguard Jeyne Ladybright favours the spear but I never met a woman who used an axe before."

She laughed. "I favour the sword, but I'm not that bad with an axe. But you'll need to learn against other weapons too, so maybe you can face by blade too."

"You want me to learn the sword then?" Maekar asked.

"Would it do you much harm? Ive always found it was easier to know how to use two weapons."

"I never bothered before. Never needed to," Maekar said. "But, since I have only the use of one arm, wouldn't it be best to concentrate on a single weapon first?"

She smiled. "Yes but even if you do, you wont always be faced with another axe in battle will you?"

"True, but all weapons should be equal to facing others in battle, don't you think?"

"Should but rarely are, thats why so many die." She replied lightly. "You should know that by now."

"It's luck that kills a man in battle, that and being less skilled than his opponent," Maekar said.
He grimaced.
"Could you get me some milk of the poppy? This lot has almost worn off."

She did.
"Maybe it is and maybe it isnt, but the chosen weapon Im sure helps too."

Maekar drank the milk of the poppy before answering.
"I'm sure it does."
He yawned.
"I'm tired and in pain. I don't suppose you'd care to warm me while I sleep?"
