"But I doubt that even you would be that cruel." She replied with a grin. "Your not that much of a coward!"

"I'm glad you think so but a man with one arm can't fight on fair terms," Maekar protested. "Beides, I'm only cruel to those who deserve it."

"yes but the man with one arm has to learn to face all things with one arm, not take the easy way out.2 She countered.

"I don't want to face things the hard way," Maekar grumbled. "I had my fill of that as a bastard, though I'll agree that my past wasn't as bad as your own. A bastard is still a bastard though and I am the son of a bastard too."

"Makes no difference. You start the self-pity and you lose yourself. Just learn to deal with it." She said.

I don't want to, Maekar thought.
"You make me want to pull you down and make love to you just to prove there are still some things I can do," he said. "But I know it's too soon for that."

"Am I that easy to read?" She asked in jest. "I know mny men who have lost their hands to the finger dance Ser. Its better for you as you dont see your hand after its been mutilated every day. If you pity the lost of arm, how will you manage your trade?"

"I haven't a trade any more," he groaned. "I was the queen's guard once, and then I was her headsman. The gods only know what I am to do when I get out of this bed."

"Train to be as good with one hand as you were with two." She pressed. "Only then will you be happy again."

"I'll do the best I can," Maekar vowed. "I don't know anything else, nor do I wish to. I'm a dragon, not a peasant."

"Then stay a dragon. When you are well enough I can help you with training. Only you can let yourself become a peasent. Why take the risk?"

He sat up a little straighter in the bed.
"You are a fighter, my lady?"

"If I wasnt I would be dead by now Ser, as would you. So why would you even suggest giving it up?"

Anger flashed through Maekar's eyes but there was fear in it too.
"Do you think I want to go out on the training yard to be pitied by those with two arms? Or, worse, to have those who don't like me laugh at me?"

"Then dont. Im sure the Queen would let you practise inside until you were better, and could handle more." She put her hand on his, trying to reassure him. "Do you think it was easy for anyone learning to fight? I learnt in the backyard from a whore. Then I took it further until I was the best I could be at that time. One arm doesnt make a difference. Most tutors teach you how to fight with both hands anyway."
