The guard allowed Lord Simon into the tent with a wary expression on her face. Ariel was inside, and she gave a cheery smile at Simon, though the rest of Ariel's women gave somewhat black looks.
"Lord Master of Laws," she said. "It is an unexpected surprise."

Simon returned the princess' smile, and then he winced slightly, unconsciously rubbing his wounded left arm with his right. The awkwardness was slowly fading from his gait as his wounds healed, but he was still slightly unsteady. "I'm glad I was able to surprise you now, seeing how my previous attempt failed rather miserably," he said amiably.

Ariel chuckled. "Yes. Well, I would say I'm sorry to have missed our appointment, but it would be terribly insincere of me." She sobered a bit. "Though I am sorry that so many good and honorable men perished that day."

"My squire was killed by a wildling woman in the fray, before I could get between them," Simon said sorrowfully. "I was acting foolishly, to get so many men killed. I was right though, you were there. I saw you," he said simply.

Ariel shrugged. "I wasn't there when the fighting was over," she said in mild concession. "But that's water done, and the Queen and I are in accord once more, so you needn't worry that I'll lead you on any more wild goose chases."

A smile touched the corner of Simon's lips. "I trust not," he said, before pulling out his flask and taking a swig. "I suppose I really just wanted to see you up close and in person, to be sure that you were not the Unicorn that you seemed to be. And to be sure that I would not wake up one morning with a knife between my ribs," he added.

Ariel looked at Simon with a bright smile. "Well, I'm certainly not that pure," she responded with a shake of her head. "I couldn't even ride one."
"And no, you needn't fear that I'll cut your throat in the night. I already tried to do the political equivalent, but Her Grace would have none of it." She shrugged. "Though I'd advise you to look for another bride for Brandon."

"That subject will not even cross my mind until we cross the Mander River, Lady Ariel, of that you can be assured. Marriages and titles and lands are not something that anyone ought to have on their mind, when we have a thousand leagues of hostile territory between us and our homes," Simon spoke the words fervently, though a note of sorrow was evident in his voice. "Lady Hightower may be dead already, with my mother and sister; only the Father Above knows if any of us will live to see the south, so what belongs to whom is not really what concerns me."

Ariel nodded. "I had meant to do the same, but as I'm sure you're aware, events made it clear that my rejoining with Rhaenys could not wait. It was either to negotiate here at Queenscrown, or watch as my very existence beyond her reach splintered her army yet further. So here we are, allies once more."

"To alliances of expediency," Simon said with a slight note of sarcasm in his voice. He took a long swing from his flask and offered it to the Lady Ariel.

Ariel smirked and took the flask. "To alliances of honor," she said, sipping shortly. "I gave my word and my fealty, and I do not mean to retract it just because it is 'expedient' later." She returned the flask.

"Would you be surprised to hear that I believe you? I could not understand your motives for speaking up at the Lord's Council; it seemed like a right foolish decision for a woman of such obvious intellect as you possess. Her grace the queen needs as many competent advisers as she can find, I think, and, no matter what is said about you, Lady Ariel, none can claim you incompetent. I will be glad to know that you are an ally of Queen Rhaenys; or at the very least I will be glad to be blissfully ignorant," Simon said, taking back the flask and capping it.

Ariel nodded. "You're full of surprises tonight, Lord Tarly. I had expected suspicion as I received from the Queen, if not outright disbelief. It's good to know that the Queen has a pillar such as yourself when giving advice. As you said, she'll need all the aid she can get, with this war upon us."
