"And what is your answer?" Byron asks.

"The only way to be appointed King's Justice, is in the Queen's good graces. As her grace relies on me to investigate those she appoints, it is also true that the only way to be appointed means being in MY good graces. Do we understand each other so far? Good." Thatcher smiled. "I see something in your eye which suggests you are a capable man. I give not a shit for capable men, unless they are my capable men. That is to say, men with whom I have an understanding."

Byron cocks his head slightly, appearing neither daunted nor confrontational. "You have men that report to you, Lord Thatcher. You have asked them about me. What did they tell you?"

"I know that you served your King admirably during the rebellion, I know your brother is a cruel, but competent man. I know you are decent with a sword, and stupid. All this is very well. As I said, I know you are capable. What I want to know is if you are pliable. If you were the King's Justice could I count on you to do things that needed to be done, without question. Not all justice is done from a headsman's block, after all."

"I suppose my pliability would depend on what precisely you wished me to do. I was not born without subtlety, Lord Thatcher, but I will not act against the King's family or my own."

Thatcher looked shocked, and to his credit insulted. "Of course not, of course not, Ser Byron, quite the opposite. I assure you I have the King's interest at heart at all times. I was a thatcher, a stableboy, amongst other things, before I was raised to where I am. I owe them everything. I will not allow that to be compromised. But the King has many many enemies. I do not ask you to be a simple cyvasse piece moved about without consultation, but I do ask that if I come to you, with some request for action, you take it under the most serious advisement."

Byron nods, content. "Of course. Then I have no objections."

"Very well. I shall introduce you to the Queen, and we shall see if we can't get her to accept you to the position."

Byron bows. "I am much obliged, Lord Thatcher." He pauses for a moment. "I understand that the Queen is a busy woman, but I should greatly appreciate it if this introduction could take place sooner rather than later."

"I shall endeavor to make it so." Thatcher said, with a gesture that suggested the matter was at an end.

"Then I shall take my leave," Oakheart says, and does.
