The way to King's Landing lay out before Owen and his small party as they mounted up and readied for the journey. Owen tightened his belt and fastened his longsword tightly before kicking his horse into a gallop, "Yah!", he said as the others followed his horse's pace.
The company rode for miles before letting their horses take a break by a small pool at the base of a large white mountain. Harry was leaning against stone with his hands over his eyes. Owen was standing, restless to get back on the road. The Septon was staring blankly into space, and the two guardsmen were deep in conversation about who was the stronger of the two.
After two hours, Owen spoke up, "Ready to get back on the road, gents?". He eyed the motley crew with veiled disappointment. This wasn't the crew he'd like to be riding with... but it was all his father could spare. Few men wanted to get back on the road. The last war had been dividing and bloody enough, every man wanted to stay at home.
So he had to take the forgotten seventh sons and the old men with no families.
He was about to mount his horse again and try to get the others on their feet when he heard a rustling.
"Seven hells", Owen said, drawing his sword impulsively. Harry looked up and put a hand on the (short) longsword he carried.
"Bandits?", Harry asked.
"Or animals", Owen responded. "Either way we're in for a fight. I'm hungry and could use some venison. Eilan knows how to cook it well too", he said, pointing to the septon with his off-hand.
Then the bandits broke through the woods. "Harry, get your ass over by Eilan, don't let him die. Thomas and Kennet, get the fuck by my side."
Everyone did as he said.
The bandits were even more a motley bunch than Owen's group--if that was possible. They wore scrap armor and crude iron blades. One of them was snarling like a dog too. He probably had rabies, Owen thought.
Two of the bandits charged Owen; he lifted his sword and brought it down quickly on one of them, pivoting and landing a blow on the other one. One bandit approached Harry, but the squire was good enough to hold his own, Owen didn't care to look back until the two bandits were dead on the ground before him.
This didn't take too long. The first cuts were enough to catch these bandits off guard and Owen took advantage of this, landing two more quick blows before resuming a defensive position.
The guards had meanwhile killed one bandit and were each fighting one more. Owen landed a deep cut on one of the men he was facing and kicked the other to the ground. Then Owen went to double team the bandit who was beginning to overpower Harry. When Owen approached that bandit, he realized the predicament he was in and began to run.
Owen shrugged and laughed. He turned back to the other guards, and called for Harry to bring around the horses and settle them.
Owen and the two guards pretty quickly made work of the other bandits, and Owen let the wounded one live. He had no particular interest in killing. He just wanted to get to King's Landing, dammit.
When the fight was over, some were smiling or sighing, Owen was just ready to move on.
