Pate's Hamlet is an undistinguished little village located in the Gift, apparently founded by a man named Pate. Or so it was. As riders from the Night's Watch approach, they see dark smoke and burned farms up ahead.

The Black Brothers, following the leadership of the First Ranger, approach the town cautiously, every hand straying toward a swordhilt or longbow. They spread out slightly, so that each rider is about ten feet apart, and make their way slowly into the small hamlet.

The town seems to be deserted, and only corpses remain. The great majority of them are men, no doubt villagers trying to protect their hamlet. The women seem to have fled or been taken away. The rangers find a few wildling corpses amongst the rest, but the battle seems to have been mostly one-sided.
Everything of value in the village appears to have been taken, and most of the houses are looted and burned. A scout finds tracks leading northwards.

They follow them, though Cracker sends two men back to Castle Black to report to the Lord Commander.

The tracker estimates there are 30 men in the party they are following, all on foot. The trail leads north, back to the base of the Wall, where it suddenly stops.

They check the Wall for clues to see if the unknown attackers went over it, or if they merely marched east or west along the Wall's southern face.

There are no tracks leading to the east or west.

The men turn and head towards Castle Black, marking the spot where the attackers presumably climbed it.
