Farman raised one eyebrow at the woman, and his frown deepened even further, if possible.
"I've been on the Wall for almost thirty years, and I've met a few of you northerners who possess that queer talent. Still, Lord Olander Reed seemed to know things before they happened and I learned to trust his sight more than once. If the Wildling army is even half the size of Benjen Stark's force, I don't have anywhere close to the number of men needed to repulse it here," the Lord Commander said solemnly.

"How many men would you need, do you think?" Ondrew asked. He was worried that with the chaos caused by the surrender of The Stark, Winterfell may not be as helpful as in times past.

The Lord Commander almost laughed, something he had not done in years. "Master Burley, I have about two men for every mile of Wall to protect. The full strength of the Watch is not anywhere close to a thousand swords, and it seems you know more about the wildling army than I do," he said, nodding politely at the young woman.

"You should send word to raise the North." Ondrew said, even as he sounded unsure. "But to who? The Stark is in chains. All the important lords are in the South begging forgiveness."

Hamish stood silent, listening to Ondrew and the Lord Commander. As he heard the mentioning that the lords had gone south, he hawked.

"Aye, that thought had crossed my mind. With Stark dead and his infant commanding Winterfell, there are few men of the North to whom I can turn. I had thought to write to the King, seeking his aid, but without his brother's influence I do not know if he would care a whit for the happenings of us in the North," Farman said.

"With your Lordships approval, perhaps Hamish and I could tell your tale through the North and see what men can be raised? Some times a messenger carries more truth than a simple bird."

"That would certainly be helpful, Master Burley, you are absolutely correct on that account. I will begin mobilizing the Night's Watch, to see if we can't find any corporeal evidence of this new King-beyond-the-Wall, though I thank you for the information you have provided." Farman shook his head as if to clear it.
"Fucking Stark," he said, disgustedly. "What is it about crowns that always seems make reasonable men fuck everything up?" he asked, though the question was obviously rhetorical.

"I know not milord. Hunk of useless metal." Ondrew said, shaking his head.
"I go now, Lord Commander Farman. I shall return." Ondrew nodded again, and gestured for the small group of Clansman to follow him.

Their orders are to follow stealthily, and see if they can discover the destination or intent of the wildlings.

A breathless clansman ran up to Ondrew and whispered in his ear, "They are mostly mounted, probably scouts. They are sizing up the Wall, and also Eastwatch. How many ships do the Brothers have?" Burley asked curiously.

"Of warships we have three, although the commander at Eastwatch has about a score of trading vessels that could be outfitted for battle if the need arose."
