Hamish knocked at the door to the room at Moat Cailin, in which Cregan was staying.
“Enter” the voice belonging to Cregan answered.
Hamish stepped through the door and entered the room. It was a sparse room, which reminded Hamish of the private office that Cregan kept back at Cerwyn Castle.
“So what can I do for you, my friend?” Cregan asked as he looked up from a book that he was reading.
“It is my twentieth name day tomorrow, and we have tradition in the Harclay clan that we go out early in the morning and hunt for whatever prey we happen to come across, and we do not return until we have killed the specific animal. So I came here to tell you that I will be going out tomorrow, and I do not know when I will return. It will probably be only a day or two, but it may be as much as a week. I have arranged for my cousin Duncan to take my place as leader for the clans, while I am away.”
Cregan looked at his friend, not really sure how to respond. They were at war here, and the Moat might be attacked at any time, though the scouts had reported no enemy troops around, so it looked like it would be peaceful another couple of days, but it was tradition for the Harclay clan and he would not refuse a man, doing as tradition told him, so Cregan nodded.
“You are free to go, my friend. Good Hunting, and return as quickly as you can.”

The sun had barely risen, but most of the clansmen had gathered outside of Hamish's tent to wish him a good hunt, and to congratulate him on his name day. No clouds could be seen in the sky, so it looked like it was going to be a pretty sunny and warm day, which promised a good hunt. He clasped the hands of every man that had come to wish him luck, gave a small prayer to Old Gods and retrieved his bow and arrows, his spear, and the other equipment he would need for staying out in the wilderness for a few days.
As he was heading out of the camp, Cregan was waiting for him at the end of the hill that lead him north, and would take him on his journey.
“I just wanted to give you a little something before you go, my friend.” Cregan said as Hamish came up to him.
Cregan handed Hamish a knife, the hilt made of stag horn and blade was about 6 inches long.
“Here, I hope it will bring you good luck during your hunt”
Hamish thanked Cregan for the gift, clasped his friends arm, and headed north.

Hamish kneeled and touched the ground, where the deer had left it's tracks. He had been out almost a full day, and it was getting dark. Soon it would be to dark to continue to follow the animal, which meant that the animal that the Gods wanted him to kill wasn't the deer he had been tracking for most of the day. It had been two days since he left Moat Cailin, and since that time, he had followed two deers and one elk, but none of the animals had been the one that he was meant to hunt. He searched and found a good place to set camp, and headed out to find some small animal to eat, like a squirrel or a rabbit.
He sat and watched the fire, while he nibbled on the cooked rabbit-bone, taking the last of the meat of the bone. He had managed to sneek up close to the unsuspecting animal, killing it with a arrow. He had managed to kill 5 rabbits before heading back to the camp, skinning them, and then roasting them over the open fire. He threw the bone into the darkness, and then headed towards the small hole beneath a tree where he had decided he would spend the night. It protected him from the wind, and he would be able to protect himself it any predetors would come, smelling the roasted rabbit.
