Lord Cregan looked at the open field where he had gathered the two groups of soldiers that he had taken out to train for the day. Since the King had left Moat Cailin, Cregan had divided the soldiers into smaller groups which he took out and trained in different battle formations and battle tactics, so they were prepared in case they needed to battle. He had given the command of the Harclay men to Hamish, letting them prepare for the battles themselves, so that even he got a little surprised when the battle was fought. They fought with blunted weapons, so that they did not sustain any heavy injuries.

Hamish walked through the small camp that the clansmen had set up outside Moat Cailin. He had spoken to them about the plans that he had come up with, and they had listened and spoken their turn, and after some time they had all come up with a good plan to surprise Cregan and his men this day. The warriors that had traveled had come to see the young Harclay-heir as their leader, and if some dispute came up between them, they sought out Hamish to settle the fight.

Cregan urged on the men that he was commanding, as the “enemies” attacked. They had fought for about two hours, no one really gaining ground, but the last half hour the “enemy” had begun to push them back. He shouted the order to move to the left and then press forward, as the “enemy” had a weaker line there. He managed to give his men new strength, and his men started to win. Then he heard shouts coming from his right flank. Hamish had attacked it seemed.

Hamish had watched the battle from his hiding point, and as he saw Cregan moved toward the left side of the field, he motioned for the men to attack the flank. He rushed beside his men into the fight, not staying behind as most of the commanders usually did, and this gave the clansmen added strength as they attacked. They had surprised the groups and started to win ground quickly, but as Cregan and the other leader managed to group his men against them, they were quickly “defeated”.

Cregan and Hamish talked to their men, praising them for their prowess in the battle, giving advice where advice was needed and yelled where yelling was needed, before heading back to Moat Cailin.
