This imposing castle is the Western base of the Night's Watch, though it technically is the second castle away from the end of the Wall, it is still the most strategically viable, and better placed. The current commander of the castle is Ser Jason Tarth, who was appointed to his position by Lord Commander Farman four years ago.

Lord Commander Farman arrives at the Shadow Tower with five and twenty men, surprising Ser Jason Tarth who did not expect him to arrive from the southwest. It is obvious to all that the Lord Commander is in a foul mood.

Rickard Evergreen is once again making Night's Watch history by being the first fugitive to sneak back onto the Wall. Ser Liam Renfield, his assistant in pioneering criminology, is walking out in the open. Why? Well, noone's looking for HIM.
