After a week on the dusty road the Septon Tomas Benedict and his followers approached the keep near Horn Hill. The defensive fortifications prevented the group from moving further so they decided to settle for the night just outside of the walls.
“Blessed are the pure of heart, says the maiden who honors those who practice purity in thought and deed. The maiden honors those who cleanse their mind and souls of filthy habits and honors her by striving towards purity,” Tomas said as he read from the Seven Pointed Star.
“To honor me, says the Maiden, a man must not swear, or lie or cheat or take comfort in the arms of a harlot. He must honor his fellow man as he does his own brother and be true to his wife and honor her as he would honor me,” Tomas said as a group gathered around the fire as he spoke.
“The Father dispenses justice as a tax man accounts for every coin. No debt will go unpaid, and every man that is owed will earn his due. No man is exempt from their debt to their father and though some may mortgage their debt till later, those that do will incur a greater debt then any could ever imagine.”
“Blessed is the Mother, whose mercy is great to those who show mercy but be wary those that are quick to judge, as he who is quick to judge and without heart to his brothers and sisters will be judged himself by the Father who is quicker to anger and whose fire will not be quelled by the Mother’s mercy,” Tomas snapped the book shut quickly startling some of the younger crowd among him.
“Brothers and sisters, these words I speak today are from the Seven Pointed Star, our faiths most holy record. These are not just words in a book . . . these are the promises of our beloved aspects,” the Septon stood tall as the fire light danced with his prism and cast beautiful rainbows across the summer soil.
“It is not enough to honor the Seven with attendance at the Sept, the Seven demand that you honor them in your hearts as well. A man who only has outward signs of piety will not earn the Seven’s love. It is not enough to honor the Seven through tithe, as the Seven loves the poor who gives their all more then the rich who open up only a tenth of their fortune.”
“Centuries ago, our ancestors brought our faith from the Seven Hills of the Andals to our home, they fought to protect our faith against all enemies both far and near and to enrich our lives with the Father’s justice, the Mother’s mercy, the Maiden’s purity, the Crone’s wisdom, the Warriors strength, the Smith’s good sense and the Stranger’s order. Our ancestors fought to bring light to a land that was dark, as the crone holds a candle to light our own way.”
Septon Benedict lit a candle and held it above his head, “like our fathers before us, we must also light the way for a land that is lost, a land where kin slay kin, the strong trample the weak, maids are deflowered of their virtue and justice is a luxury for only the wealthiest of men. My brothers and sisters, today we start our journey to light the kingdom’s way to make the blind see and rekindle the faith that our ancestors before us fought and died for,” a few men in the crowd grabbed and lit their own candle and held it above their heads also.
“Too long has our faith remained silent as those entrusted with our well being hid the light of the Seven behind fancy Septs and fancy clothes,” Tomas tore away his own fancy Septon clothes to show the more modest homespun robe of his early days.
“Is the light of the Seven something that should be hidden,” Tomas asked?
“NO!” came the response.
“No! We will shine the light of the Seven for all to see, we will light the way back to the hearts of our brothers and sisters, we will brighten our dark lands and ensure the Father’s justice is not just for the strong but for all who love and honor their aspects.”
More candles began to light up across the crowd and be held above the crowd around the keep.
“My brothers and sisters, we will be a beacon for all that are pure and love our Faith, we will fight for our faith to take it back from those that will abuse their promises and squander their opportunity.”
“Brothers and Sisters. . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY!” Tomas said shouting the final part.
“WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY . . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY . . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY!” the crowd shouted around Tomas until he was sure the sound had carried to every part of Westeros.
“The Road will be long and winding and there will be many who will want to extinguish our light. . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY. When our brother next to us grows weary and is unable to carry the torch. . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY. When our brothers are persecuted and our enemies seek to douse our flame. . . WE WILL LIGHT THE WAY.”
The cries of the followers outside the keep were heard by the soldiers inside the keep who thinking that the chants were for Lord Hightower and the Far Reach began to shout as well.
This intensified the chants until over 40,000 men women and children were shouting the bands new motto.
“Let us Pray. . . oh dutiful Father, grantor of Justice, honor us as we seek to unseat those that hate our Faith, merciful Mother, protect us as we show mercy to those who oppose us. Purest Maiden, allow us to honor you in our thoughts as well as our deeds, Mighty warrior, strengthen us to stand when we our afraid, industrious Smith, allow us to rebuild a new kingdom in the shape of the Seven, Wise Crone, Light our Way so that we can light our fellow man, and Cruel Stranger, quickly strike down those who oppose our most righteous cause,” with that final prayer, Septon Tomas sat down, it would be a long road for the group and many would not survive the journey but it was something that needed to be done for a long time and he knew that his faith would protect him against all odds.
