Lord Howland Royce was dressed in nearly the same spartan manner that his father was, the similarity was remarkable, though it was a bit more stylish. He stood infront of the lords of the Vale unafraid, proud and his jaw set straight, again much as his father used too.
"Lord Brynden Royce, accuses me of wanting to proclaim myself King of the Vale. Though as I am sure you all now the only time the word King comes out of my mouth is with great vehemence and bitterness at the unlawful jailing of Lord Roland Royce, my father and his later "execution" by being pushed down some stairs. Rickon Baratheon himself called it a most fould deed! I will also remind you that Cedric Lannister, or King Cedric as he calls himself is the father of Brynden Royce's siblings. So why he tries to make it seem like I have a closer connection to him than he does I do not know," his words rang true and clear filled with honesty and dignity. Howland paused for effect and let the lords mull over his words so far.
"Many of you were present at my father's ceremony in King's Landing, and for that I am grateful as is my father's spirit I am sure. I view all of you as my allies, wether or not I have your full support in this war. So I find it aggrevating that Lord Brynden Royce, a man that has not set foot in the Vale in over fifteen years, calls you murderers of children, treacherous weasels and sons of convicted criminals. Lord Grafton is the son of one of the greatest generals we have had in the Vale, and one of my father's truest friends. I know for a fact and as do you all, that Roland Royce was not the man to conspire with such people. As Lord of the Vale, I demand Lord Brynden Royce to apologies to all of you. Even his own good family the Hunters have been insulted by his words, as Ser Davos Hunter a man that I have known since I was knighted is still standing beside, me proud as ever," Lord Royce continued. There were some angry mutterings and chuckles at the last part. Howland smiled slightly at his own joke before continuing.
"I was told by my father and later on by Master Brandon, then verified by the knights present at the incident that Lady Aranya Royce, bless her memory, once threatened to cut of Ser Robb Mallister's ears for trying to court Lady Rhae Rykker, the bethroeth of Lord Brynden Royce at that time. My father saw this exhange and he was of course angry as would anyman that find someone threatening a noble in ones home. Instead of resorting to violence he simply raised his voice and the incident was over without any bloodshed. My father was not one to act out in violence when angry. No doubt he was angry at the former king Rickon Baratheon when he appointed the son of the Crow and the traitour Martell as lord of Sunspear. Did my father hit the king then? No, he stood on his principles and resigned as Lord Hand!"
"At the wedding of Rickon Baratheon and Lady Jeyne Lannister, his Mother Lady Anya Stark came. Those of you present will remember that Rodrick was overjoyed and leapt to embrace her. Clearly the king loves her much. Those of you present at my father's ceremony will recall that Rickon Baratheon said that my father wanted Queen Anya Stark to be tried for high treason. In my opinion this must be something that is tied to the reason Rickon abdicated. And if he abdicated the accusation must have been true. I wonder how Rodrick would have responded to that, it is the same Rodrick that killed the messenger that brought him news that the lords of the realm demanded his abdication in favour of his son. So if my father indeed attacked the king which is what the Queen Selyse wrote in this letter, and if the only people present were Rickon, Rodrick and my father. The Queen no doubt heard the events from Rodrick. And while my father was the stout and chivalrous warrior and lord, Rodrick Baratheon is anything but!" Howland said, and passed around the one letter sent by the queen, the one where she had written that Roland had not been imprisoned unlawfully among others.
Then the letter where the Queen had offered him the position as Lord Hand was passed around, "Clearly Brynden does not converse much with his sister, if he thinks that I have hidden ambitions of seceding and proclaim myself king then there would be nothing stopping me for accepting the position as Hand. He claims I do not have honour, but that is the very thing stopping me from accepting the proposal of a king who has done nothing more than bankcrupting this realm!" Howland finished his speech. "So who is with me to make a better future for our children and the children of the realm!?"
