“Hold steady! Fight with all your might!” Vayon yelled out, as he knocked down an opponent. He looked over and say Lord Tully pierce a man through the chest, and heave his sword out to the collapse of the ribcage. A knight stepped forward and Pieter locked with him in combat, their blades whirring. However, Pieter got the upper hand with a kick to the Knight’s chest, and as he keeled over Pieter drove his blade through the man’s throat.
“Well done, M’Lord” Vayon yelled to Pieter, as he saw cavalry charging towards them.
“HOLD STEADY! PREPARE YOURSELVES!” He yelled out, as the waves of cavalry crashed into their flank.
----------------------
“Dammit, he was outnumbered and he made fools out of us.” Vayon hissed angrily, readjusting his leg, wrapped in a large cast.
Pieter sighed, “Vayon, give it a rest. We did the best we could, be glad we had Desmond. Without him we would have been massacred. He did the best he could to hold our lines, in the end it just wasn’t enough. The King has many brilliant commanders, it was inevitable for us to lose.” Pieter stated warily, unhappy yet accepting of the truth.
“So what is our plan, Lord Tully?” Vayon asked him finally, after several moments of silence.
“The King is north of us, and now outnumbers us. Ser Ulger Gaunt is southeast of us at Antlers, with a force of 6,000 men. Lord Prestor is west of us at Riverrun, with over 2,000 men. Our best option is make south for Harrenhall, and lock ourselves tight.”
“But M’Lord, we cannot afford to sit in a castle while Rodrick sieges us. He could split his army and wreak havoc.”
“It is our only option, Vayon. I do not believe Rodrick will wait for us to starve ourselves, or try to siege us. He is a man of battle, not of patience. He will do his best to prevent us from gaining Harrenhall… But if we do, I believe he will leave us be.” Pieter finished.
“Yes, you are right… What of Lord Reed’s troops, I suggest he marches south to attack the King.” Vayon stated matter-of-factly. Pieter shook his head, frowning.
“No, no. Seagard still has 4,000 loyalists. You should never march past a keep that is a threat to you. You open yourself for attack from behind. No, Lord Reed must take Seagard and kill all the loyalist men there. After that he should march south and meet Rodrick in battle. We will then attack Ser Gaunt at Antlers, and hopefully defeat him there.” Pieter concluded. Vayon sat and thought it over for a moment.
“Yes, you are right M’Lord. There is no other way to approach it, without risking ourselves to another heavy loss.”
“Aye, Vayon. Now if you will excuse me, I wish to speak with the men.” Pieter stood and left the tent.
-----
Soon several hundred men stood gathered before Pieter, with many and more coming around to hear his speech.
“My loyal men, you answered my call when no one else would! You have remained loyal to your Lord, even in the face of battle! You held strong against the wretched King Rodrick, where any others would have backed down! You are Riverlanders through and through, we are the hardiest of men! We have been hardened by the ravaging of our lands, and now is the time to show the rest of Westeros that we will stand for it no longer! Riverrun fell to Lord Prestor, aye, but the garrison died heroes’ deaths! For every one of our defenders that fell, two of those wretched Lannisters died!” The crowd roared out in pride, hearing of their comrades brave deaths.
“Do not mourn our loss at Skiff’s Vale, for with each battle you gain experience! Even now as we speak, an army of the North marches south, to aid us in battle! Today, Lord Dondarrion sent a force of cavalry to distract King Rodrick’s host, so that we may reach Harrenhall in time to hold its walls against Rodrick.” Pieter yelled out to his men.
“The day of judgement for King Rodrick is coming! No man may turn a blind eye to the Seven, not even the King! He will answer for his crimes, and we will restore justice to Westeros!”
