Gariss stood in the yard, facing Zach Faire, his best friend and attendant. The only reason why he was not a full warrior or knight himself was because of his lower birth. Born to a hedge knight and a landed knight's daughter.
Despite his upbringing, however, he and Gariss were the best of friends, and spent a fair amount of time with each other, despite their different schedules.
They sparred in the yard, like usual, trading blows and assaults. They both wielded greatswords, as both were strong and able enough to wield them. Their attacks were furious, and their style without faults. Near equals, they drew a crowd, and though not very large, it was alive.
Most cheered for Lord Gariss, as he expected they would, but a few who were more informal with the young lord, cheered for the underdog. They had been training a lot as of late, and it was due to the situation to the south. It seemed all of Westeros was on the brink of chaos and war, and the North would have to choose a side.
He would know how to defend himself and his men, if it came to that.
He and Zach continued to trade furious blows, each being parried, and only rare assaults making their way past defenses, and even then they were not strong.
The two clashed for what seemed like a half hour before Gariss mounted a final attack, pushing his friend back and twisting their swords together, and, with a twist of his wrist, disarmed Zach, ending the fight. Cheers of approval erupted around them, and Gariss removed his helmet and smiled. "Well done, Zach," he complimented.
Zach removed his helmet and frowned. "I'll beat you someday," he said, before his face grew into a smile.

Hours later, Lord Gariss roamed his solar, under the towering bookshelves that circled around his high char and table. A single candle lit the table and the books he read.
He picked up the nearest book and it read "Famous Wars and Battles of Time." Opening it up randomly, he sat down and began to read on how a famous war commander, a thousand years ago fought a famous battle on the Trident, and how his men rallied to his cause to rebel against the king of the time. The commander held his ground, fighting the king's men, fighting a battle bravely, when his men were pushed from the side by the king's men's cavalry. Quickly ordering his spearmen to turn and face the horse, holding a line against them, he then ordered brought his reserves from behind to flank the cavalry, crippling the other army's moral and men, as if he expected it. The book went on to account other battles and wars, in detail.
Gariss would have to learn from these battles, and the way the commander took the victory. This type of reading could decide the fate of a battle he fights in the future, for whatever couse of action the North decides to take... and that decision would have to be made soon.
