Howland fought furiously in the yard, he had known how the king would react but he had still hoped that the bastard would abdicate. His opponent was Ser Leonard Torrent and he found out the hard way why the man was considered among the best fighters of the Vale. The blows he parried reverbrated through his shoulders, it felt like they were on fire. A chop was stopped inches from his helmet, nearly forcing him to his knees. He had taken a sound beating from the man but Leonard didn't come out of the sparring unharmed either. Leonard had taken a few blows to the shoulder and tigh.
Another blow from Leonard forced Howland lift up his shield and roll to the side following the motion of the blow. He got up on unsteady feet and nodded to Leonard, "I yield". Removing his equipment, Howland excited the training yard and went to his solar to read some of his fathers writing on warfare.
His father had written a great deal of how to combat the mountain clans, the Battle of King's Landing, the first one he was in, told of how the enemy used confusion to disorganise the sieging armies causing them to fight eachother. He had also written about the coup of the Crow and how he had snuck out Rickon Baratheon. How his forces had fought in the Battle in the Kingswood when the crow had attempted to ambush the King, where Howland's grandfather had gotten his last injury in this life. There was also some accounts of the Dornish War, and suggestions on how to deal with it better. Though there were precious few advices regarding the leadership of Lord Alexander the Bloody. Then came the tales of the Basilisk War and the second siege of King's Landing. Howland envisioned all of these battles and how they played out. At last, when he had finished reading he looked out of the window to find that dawn was approaching. Soon there after he fell asleep over a map of the Vale and Westeros with forces displayed with marbles.
