Out behind Pyke Hall lay a large training yard that was constantly in use by the Ironborn in King’s Landing. Since taking up position of master of Pyke Hall, Ser Wulf Pyke had been a regular visitor to the training yard. Those of his own ship and the ships of captains who had sailed with Wulf knew his skill, but he had to prove himself to others who had dim views of those who followed the greenlander gods.
Kernon Sunderly had been a captain who held just such views. The Sunderlys had fought for Saltcliffe in his rebellion, and had been bitter against the Harlaws ever since they were defeated. On Wulf’s first visit to the training yard, the day he took up his position at the Hall, Kernon had been the first captain to challenge him.
“Knight,” he had spat, “come see what the Drowned God does to your weakling gods.” The man had raised his axe threateningly.
Wulf had looked at Rodrik Blacktyde beside him and chuckled. “Never mind that,” he said, “come up to my room and see what I did to your wife,” Wulf called back grabbing his crotch and winking.
Kernon had growled, then charged at Wulf, blunted axe in hand. Wulf quickly raised his own weapon, and held it with two hands to block the strength of the charge. Both men took a step backwards in recoil as their weapons hit each other, but were on each other again in seconds. Wulf swiped at Kernon’s side, but the blow was deflected and countered, sending Wulf onto the back foot. Wulf narrowly dodge another attack, then sent one back against Kernon, who jumped backwards. Kernon looked to be unbalanced when he landed, and Wulf pressed the attack, but the captain recovered quickly, and met the blow.
The two fought one another for awhile, until Kernon sent Wulf’s axe flying from his hand. Kernon raised his axe above his head, and brought it down to finish Wulf, but the blow never connected, as Wulf grabbed the axe before it hit and ripped it from Kernon’s hands, throwing at half way across the yard. Before Kernon could react, he slammed a fist in Kernon’s face, sending him sprawling to the ground.
Wulf jumped down onto Kernon, and began hammering away at him. Without his knowing one of Kernon’s men had grabbed a weapon and was position himself behind Wulf to attack him. He didn’t have time to though, as Rodrik Blacktyde jumped at him pulled out his blunted sword. Kernon’s man had to spin around to meet the blow, and the two locked in combat as Kernon and Wulf grappled onto each other on the ground.
Rodrik toyed with Kernon’s man, dancing in and out of the man’s sword length, as his frustration grew at being unable to make contact. The man slashed wildly, desperately trying to get a hit in, but Rodrik was too fast for him. Finally Rodrick dispensed of the man in one lightning quick attack, slicing at his head and causing the man’s helm to ring.
On the floor, Kernon had stopped resisiting as he lay unconscious and bloodied from the fight. Wulf stood up, his fists dripping with the man’s blood, and looked around the yard at the Ironborn who were staring at him.
“My blood is Iron,” he said through laboured breaths, “any and all are welcome to test that.”
A few more men had taken up his challenge, and he had beaten each of them in hard fought fights. But by the end of the day, no man questioned his faith anymore.
