Monterys smiled thinly in response to Lord Tully's last statement.
"There would be little point my lord. I'm told Lord Barclay is not fond of Velaryons."

Pieter smiled and began his dinner, eating the food the servants had set down several minutes beforehand.

Dudley looked about the room and smiled, apparently satisfied at the way things were progressing. He asked his wife to pass him the gravy boat, and she duly obliged. As he was pouring the thick brown liquid over some tender roast ox meat, he noticed the room going quiet, so struck up conversation once more.
"Do the halls of Riverrun ring to the sounds of the children's voices when you are home Lord Tully? Do you maintain much of a court?"

"I maintain a decent enough court, I try to invite my lords to stay at Riverrun as often as possible. My children get along well enough with others, they usually play out in the courtyard." Pieter said, the sentence hanging in the air for a moment. He changed the subject, paying close attention to the other men.
"Considering the current policies taken on by Lord Cedric and the Westerlands, I would wager to say you have few friends here in King's Landing?" Pieter asked quietly.

Monterys glanced at Dudley and raised his wine-cup to his lips to hide a smile. It would be interesting to listen to Dudley's response. Indeed the Velaryons had virtually no friends in Kings Landing, but Monterys wondered sometimes what Lannister influences remained from Cedric's time as Hand.

Dudley stiffened, thinking for a moment before speaking and trying to ignore Monterys' amusement to his side.
"An interesting question my lord," he said, giving himself extra time to think.
"You'd probably win that wager." He was quiet for a moment more. At last he looked as if he was going to say something further, and he opened his mouth... but then closed it again and looked down at his food.

Pieter nodded, smiling warmly. "I apologize for the question, but it needed to be asked. Tremulous times are coming, and everybody needs friends, allies. If you ever need help, just ask." Pieter said quietly. He wiped his mouth and stood, setting the cloth down on the table.
"You must excuse me, I have other matters to attend to. Thank you again for the invitation, Lord Marbrand. It was a pleasure, Lady Marbrand, Monterys." Pieter said politely, nodding to them.

Dudley looked a little taken aback at Pieter's sudden standing. He himself pushed his chair back and stood, readying himself to accompany Pieter to the door.
"Er, of course my lord, the pleasure was all ours," he said hurriedly, looking to his wife with a puzzled expression. Presently he seemed to regain his composure. "We thank you for your offer of 'help' my lord, and I'd like to make clear that you are welcome to come and visit whenever you like."

Pieter nodded, "Thank you Lord Marbrand. I apologize for my sudden leaving, it is just that the Master of Laws has little time for rest." Pieter said apologetically, "And there is a matter of importance that I have forgotten to taken care of."

"Of course, of course," Dudley bustled with an accepting, knowing gesture.
"Farewell Lord Tully."
Returning to the dining room, Dudley plumped back down into his chair, aware of his family's eyes resting on him. He looked up with a smile. "I think that went fairly well, don't you?"
Ser Jeffry sneered. "Insolent bugger ain't he. Full of his own self-importance."
Dudley ignored his wife's brother and turned to Monterys. "Hard day?" he asked.

Monterys winced and then grinned.
"The odd bruise here and there. No more than usual."
He rose from his seat to reach for the wine and poured himself another cup from which he took a sip.
"Whatever Ser Jeffrey here thinks of his character and I must say I disagree with his assessment, The Master of Laws is a man worth cultivating."

Ser Jeffry grunted sulkily and reached for his goblet.
Dudley just nodded. "Yes, yes, I quite agree. We share so much in common, and quite frankly, I think he seemed quite well-disposed to our little family, don't you think?"

////////////////////////////////
With the news of many of the Lords Paramount of Westeros 'disagreeing' with some of King Rodrick's actions flying about, Lord Dudley Marbrand is quick to want to know exactly what is going on. He arranges to meet Monterys at their manse for a quiet discussion.
"It's been quite an afternoon," the Marbrand Lord says as he meets up with his friend once more in the study at Wormwood Manse. "It would appear we have much to discuss - chiefly, what in the name of hells we are going to do."

Monterys took a seat.
"From my point of view Dudley, I'm in a conundrum."
He paused before explaining further, even though he knew Dudley would probably know his thoughts anyway.
"As you know Dudley, it was the Lannisters that raised me, my father died in rebellion against the Baratheons and my cousins remain in exile. For those reasons I have no great liking for any Baratheon, especially when Cedric shares the same view. However my mother drummed into me from an early age that it was her belief that Breck Dondarrion was behind the murder of Uncle Avery and the death of my father. He's involved in this rebellion and appears to be one of the ringleaders. He's proved to be no friend of my family and I'll not support him."
He thought again for a moment.
"From what I can gather, Cedric has no involvement in this 'rebellion'. As such, especially given where we are, I don't think we can do anything but support the King."

Dudley nodded, a distant look on his face, his eyes glazed.
"In our current position, it would make sense. And the king would treat well those who side with him early on. But in the long term Monty, would we not find ourselves outnumbered? The Stormlands, The Vale, The Far Reach, The Riverlands... with the West seemingly playing no part, would we be condemning ourselves for no good reason?
I know you hate the man Dondarrion, and I too share your dislike - from what I gather, the man is a snake. My goodbrother has told me much of your father and Prince Avery. Were the circumstances right with regards numbers, I would be all for putting down this upjumped Stormlord and his cronies... but I fear that it might ultimately be a mistake."
