Starry Sept 542
Light sparkled through the prisms and reflected little bits of rainbow on the black marble of the ancient Starry Sept. Attendance at the Seven's oldest Sept, had increased significantly in the Far Reach thanks in part to the sizable donation of Lord Irwyn to the faith after the War against Dorne and the three decades of strife and warfare that had taken its toll on the smallfolk of Westeros. Under Septon Tomas Benedict the Faith spread the word by building small septs, septeries and mother houses across the Far Reach, and providing medical care to those locales without a Maester. Tomas served as mentor to all three Irwyn children and developed in them a very strong following in the Faith.
Of all the aspects, Tomas favored the Smith above all, he preached that all faithful should give their love, loyalty and trust to the master craftsmen so that they may be a tool to bring about the will of the Seven. Tomas had reasoned long ago that the calamities that had fallen on the land of Westeros was all part of the Smith’s plan to herd his followers back to the path.
“Fellow Brothers and Sister’s in the Faith welcome on this most glorious day,” Septon Benedict began. “Many have asked me of late, why the Seven allow wars and pestilence to fall on their people? It is an excellent question but one that is difficult to answer. We preach that the Father is just and the Mother merciful, yet still we lose friends and family well before their time due to sickness, disease or man’s own destructive influences,” the Septon pauses before continuing.
“People ask me, ‘Septon, I say my prayers, I show my devotion to the aspects, yet still my wife, brother, father, mother, sister is taken from me . . . it’s not fair Septon, it’s not fair,’” to which I say, ‘You are right, its not fair, but what right do we have as faithful to challenge the nature of the Seven?’” Septon Benedict looked out into the crowded Sept and licked his lip slowly before continuing.
“Brothers and Sisters, it is not fair sometimes, but of those among you who are potters have your creations ever questioned, ‘why you made them a bowl and not a statue?’” Benedict smiled as some in the crowd laughed, “those of you who are smiths, ‘have your plowshare’s ever complained and asked why they were not made into swords?’”
“We are all creations of the Seven and as such are subject to their influence. It is not the place of the faithful to question the will of the Seven, as it is not the place for a bowl to question the designs of the potter. The true believers should ask not why a tragedy befell their beloved, but rather to ask the Smith to reveal his part for you,” Benedict paused to let this point sink in.
“Brothers and Sisters, we do not choose which tool we have been cast into by our makers, but as tools we should offer praise and thanks to the Smith in hopes that we can be used to the best of our ability in his work. Every tool, like every person, has a place to do good works, and rather then asking why am I not taller, stronger, better looking or smarter, we should pray for guidance and ask the Seven, “How may I of humble means be at your service to work your will?”
“Let us Pray,” Benedict said as the congregation bowed their head, “Mighty Father, thank you for your creation and bless the Mother for her love and mercy when often we are deserving of none. Thank the maid for her innocence and purity at creation to allow all a fresh start in your service. We offer thanks to the Crone that her light will shine in darkness and show the steps we need to take in your service. We praise the Warrior to strengthen us when our courage fails us, and the stranger who lets us know when we have served our last useful purpose. And finally we praise the Smith, and beg that we be allowed to serve as your tool, as the Seven work to build a stronger faith in us all. In the Seven’s name we pray.”
