Lord Commander Farman sat at his desk in Castle Black, drinking a glass of wine. He’d gotten used to chilled wine in his two decades as the wall, and in truth, he actually preferred it cold. In the ten years he’d been the Lord of the Night’s Watch, he’d developed a fairly monotonous routine. Roose Stark had invaded the lands beyond the Wall a year before Jaymes said his vows, smashing the King-Beyond-the-Wall’s army on the frozen Milkwater River. Since then the wildlings had barely been a threat.
Several years ago, however, the Lord Karstark who was in truth a southron lordling, had ventured beyond the Wall in search of wildlings and had barely escaped with his life in the process. Lord Commander Jaymes had advised against the expedition but Karstark had ignored him, of course, and lost an eye as a result.
Jaymes was studying figures and revenues. In the past years, since Rickon Baratheon had abdicated his throne, the stormlord who was more of a Northman had traveled around the North, including serving on the Wall for several years. Jaymes was a newly elected Lord Commander at the time and while he could see in the former-king’s face that the crimes that sent Jaymes to the Wall were not forgotten, he developed a formal, albeit constructive, relationship with Rickon, which included repopulating and replanting the Gift, with lords whose swords were sworn to Lord Gariss of Winterfell, but paid their taxes to Castle Black.
With the revenue that generated, Lord Commander Farman had begun a series of engineering works, repairing the three main castles from which the Wall was manned. When he had accepted the position of Lord Commander he had sworn to leave the Wall higher than when he had arrived at it, and he did his best to keep up to that word. Castle Black had been restored with black granite, hauled up the quarries to the West of Queenscrown. Shadow Tower was being repaired currently, since Eastwatch was in the best condition already.
The Commander of Shadow Tower was dying, the old Ser Danwell Fossoway, a minor knight of the green-apple branch who was sent to the Wall in 516 after the Reach Rebellion, had been the Commander of Shadow Tower for two decades, but a fortnight past word had arrived at Castle Black that he had fallen into a coma and was not predicted to live much longer.
This left Jaymes up to the task of picking who would succeed him as Fossoway, and he was going through the list of possible candidates, thinking of who would be best. He sat, slowly sipping his wine and reading a treatise on finance and management, mulling his options.
