The Tale of Two Brother Part II
Horn Hill 540
Loren toured the ramparts of Horn Hill with Lord Tarly, the man had the energy of a hundred men Loren thought as he did his best to keep up with Robb as he bounded between yet uncompleted walls. Lord Tarly at the direction of Oldtown had commenced an ambitious expansion of the already large battlements of Horn Hill, a project Loren’s father had commenced almost thirty years earlier. Horn Hill was of strategic importance to the Far Reach as it served as the meeting point of the Mander River and the Dornish Mountains which served as two effective natural barriers for any invading army from the East. While wooden walls were first added to the Keep as an expansion project during the time of Andry’s Rebellion and a series of watch towers were built from the keep to the Mander, during the time of the Crow’s Coups, it was now during the fifteen years of peace that the most aggressive building projects were conducted with stone walls and towers being added using the quarries at Uplands as their source of stone. During his six years as serving with Lord Tarly, Loren worked closely with the architects and engineers of the Far Reach in building this project. Between supervising the construction, taking his devotion at the Sept, practicing his martial skills and serving Lord Tarly, most of Loren’s days ended long past sunset.
The Tarly’s were good people and Robb and his dornish bride the former Lysette Vaith did their best to make him feel welcomed. While Robb did his best to instruct Loren in the martial arts, Lady Lysette worked tirelessly to improve his manner’s. Her wit and charm and Dornish grace was a smoothing factor in Robb’s rough ways and the two complimented each other well.
Brightwater 540
Meanwhile, in Brightwater Dorian had developed as quite the scholar. A voracious reader, Dorian had the unique ability to recall almost instantly anything he had ever read. He proved very capable in learning from his Braavosi tutor the language of the largest of the Free cities. He was quick with numbers and graceful both on the dance floor and with his long sword, when his grandfather could rouse him from his hiding places to practice. Alphonse Florent passed quietly in the night in the latter part of 540 and as the old Florent died without a heir his Grandson through his daughter Dacey was named as his heir. His grandmother would pass 3 months after her husband, leaving the young Dorian alone again. In their absence, Dorian became quite close with the Brightwater Maester, Maester Samuel, and the two would on many occasions spend hours talking late into the night about obscure references from years long passed.
Oldtown 541
In 541, on his 21st name day Loren swore his vows as a knight and stood his vigil in the Starry Sept. His brother Dorian came and the two brothers who had lived two very different lives for the past 6 years were reunited with their sister Corrine who had taken their childhood friend Cyrus Varner as her husband. It was a happy reunion for the children of the Legendary General Alexander Irwyn, who had lost their mother before they could walk and their father before they turned 7. It is often the greatest relationships are forged during the darkest times and the bond between the three Irwyn offspring and their fellow fatherless friends was of paramount importance in shaping the future of the lives of these young adults, the direction of the Far Reach and perhaps one day the realm. Despite their separation whenever gathered the Orphans of Oldtown would immediately fall into their old routine and act as if nothing had changed. Now trained with different talents and different skills the two brothers sought to honor the memory of their father and mother, honor their realm and continue to combat the deeper corruptions and hidden dangers of the Westeros. Only the Smith knew what was in store for the Irwyns but most would acknowledge that the boys had a firm foundation on which to build great things.
