The Clan chiefs turned and spoke amongst themselves in quiet whispers.
"Do you not have rangers? The brave men who go beyond the wall and tell you of the doings of the wildlings?" Asked The Burley with an appraising eye.

"Aye. My rangers have reported a relatively small army of wildlings in the Skirling Pass, that they were able to scout without being noticed. However the force that I sent east up the coast has yet to return which worries me. I am in the process of organizing a second ranging to find out what those bastards are hiding."

"There is a large army assembling near Hardhome, according to the men i sent out." Ondrew said, coughing slightly as he interrupted the elder clansman. "It's bigger, much bigger than the one at Skirling Pass, and answers to a man calling himself King Tarlan."

Farman mouthed the unfamiliar name, the strange word twisting his lips into an uncomfortable grimace. "East it is then, I suppose. Since your scouts seem to know far more than mine, do you know if they've got any indication of how large this force is? I have fewer than two thousand swords at my command, only seven hundred of them Rangers."

Ondrew shook his head, "The one's in the Skirling Pass are large, the one's at Hard home are larger still. Larger than us. If you have two thousand, that's thirty five hundred with the Clans. I asked your Maester to send a message to Lords Umber, Glover, Locke and Karstark. They'll bring another two thousand, when they come. And another message went to Lord Cerwyn in King's Landing. My soon to be brother-in-law Hamish served with him during the rebellion. He should come, but how long will it take before he arrives? I know not."

"If there are two so-called Kings-Beyond-the-Wall then they will likely clash with each other before long, seeking dominance. I am almost inclined to simply wait and allow them to fight out and hope that the Stranger makes their struggle a bloody one, but I feel as though that is not the right decision right now."
The Lord Commander frowned deeply, trying to convey the feeling of unease that he had felt the last several knights. "Intuition perhaps. Regardless I will gather the Night's Watch here and attempt to learn more about our foes."

"The loser's strength will be added to the winner, if they are inclined to fight, but I would be worried to come between them. Wildlings to our left and right we do not need." Ondrew said.

////////////////////// A war council assembles in the Lord Commander's solar. Lord Bors Umber and brother Benn "The Mammoth" are there, as is Lord Harry Hornwood, along with Lords Locke and Glover. Ondrew and his grandfather are present representing the clans.
"We have a force of 4,500 men, with your black brothers milord." Ondrew said quietly, "Can we hold the wall with that?"

Farman's mouth mashed into a tight line.
"It depends. Five thousand men could defend any single castle of the Wall nearly indefinitely against a foe coming from the north, but I have nearly four hundred miles of Wall to protect. Even all the men you have assembled will be spread too thin if we're trying to protect the entire Wall. It will all depend on when and where the wildlings choose to attack."
