I think Nehmen is right, unless something happened to him during Andry's occupation.

There will eventually be a hand I guess, it's too long before the regency is over. Though it'll have to be someone Benfry can trust. Heh he could name a smith as a Hand if he wants. Guess it could be called Piety, a smith guided by the seven to heal the land or some other bs

What part of the realm does Smith hail from? (originally)

The Crownlands - a small village (not on any map) called Blackford Crossing, just north of Kings Landing - on the way to Lord Harroway's Town

He must be quite able with the sword, seeing as how he rose to Lord Commander of the KG and Lord Regent without being able to read or write

Well you just talked yourself out of the job, sonny-jim! I don't feel the need to put myself forward as an assasination target

He must be quite able with the sword, seeing as how he rose to Lord Commander of the KG and Lord Regent without being able to read or write Pure luck, I assure you. Got ridiculously lucky in the KG entry contest when he was only Expert with the sword - survived the bloodbath inside and outside Kings Landing in the recent war with Prince Andry and got to be Lord Commander more through the fact there was only 3 of us left at that point! The Regency's another story - the lesson is "Don't laugh & be smug at the Smith as he struggles to control the realm" But you're right - he was born the son of a blacksmith, became a rather dubious hedge knight and the rest just happened.

Just the sort of a man that seems right for the job for peace time, truthfully. Some of these famous lords are too ambitious and play the game of thrones way too much.

What kind of attitude is that for a cocky up-and-coming young lord like yourself!

Lord Lydden is honorable, but not foolishly proud. His loyalty lies with the King and the Regent, be it blacksmith or famous general. His younger brothers, however, are a bit more proud and reckless.

Bah, you go to war for a sword and a position, and everyone just pisses all over your rewards.
