“Cousins, how good it is to see you.” Pieter said smiling.
“It is a great time indeed, with the Tully’s back in their rightful place!” Martyn said joyfully, with Brandisas nodding, a smile on his face. A servant entered with drinks and handed them to each of the men, and set down a platter covered in food.
“It is good to have a servant give food to me.” Martyn said, picking up some food. Brandisas sipped at his ale before setting it down.
“Cousin, tell me. How have you secured your lordship in the Riverlands?” Brandisas asked, getting straight to the point. Pieter shifted, setting down his drink.
“With the King calling me to King’s Landing I have had little time to secure my position.” Pieter stated absent-mindedly. He looked into the coals in the fire…
“That is not good. The Riverlands have not seen Tully rule for hundreds of years, and we must secure our position. We must show the smallfolk the Tullys will give them good times and bring justice and peace to the Riverlands.” Brandisas said to Pieter, bringing his attention back. “The Blackwoods wont wait for you to come back from King’s Landing to take back the Riverlands.” Pieter picked up his glass, looking into the red liquid.
“All this lordship is taxing on me. Each decision you make can make or break you, especially in the situation we are in. With each day I grow more learned, and with each day I grow more wary of those around me.” Pieter swirled the glass, the red liquid flowing in even rings.
“Indeed, cousin. You are wise to be wary of those around you, because no matter how genial or cordial they act, they all want the same thing. Power.” Brandisas said bitterly, almost spitting out the last word. “What of marriage?”
Pieter looked up from the swirling wine, and smiled lightly. “I am in love, cousin, with a beautiful woman.” Brandisas frowned and shook his head.
“Who is this love of yours? You must remember, the Riverlands comes before you.” Brandisas stated sternly. Pieter looked quietly at Brandisas for a moment.
“Aerie Blackwood.” Pieter stated simply, to Brandisas’ dismay.
“A Blackwood? You cannot continue courting a Blackwood woman. The Blackwoods want nothing less than our despise, and you are wooing one of them!” Brandisas exclaimed. Pieter looked down and drained his glass, and set it back down on the table.
“I know, I have known that ever since I was a child. That is why I have had to kept it hidden. I have loved her since I was a child, cousin, but I have always known I can’t do it .” Pieter reflected. “But, I suppose now it’s time to move on. The Riverlands is not in a state for me to be marrying off to random women.”
“Yes, you must move on Pieter. You become more serious, and conscientious. For House Tully. For the Riverlands.”
“I believe I shall marry one of my more prominent bannerlords’ daughters. Lord Mallister perhaps, or one of the Frey cousins. I need a strong house to back my claim, and to help rebuild the Riverlands.” Brandisas nodded.
“Yes, both would be good choices. If you are to rebuild the Riverlands, a strong house needs to be behind you. The Blackwoods are greatly taxed by their payments to the various lords, but they will still oppose you.”
“I was planning to have a meeting of all Riverland Lords after my wedding. I wish to reform the Riverlands, to guarantee those in power back me and those who don’t aren’t. I will have each lord swear fealty to me, to renew their vows to their Lord Paramounts. Those who accept will be noted, those who don’t will be watched.” Pieter said, gazing into the coals of the fireplace.
