With an ear-shattering crash that sounded out over the noises of the battle, the Gate of the Gods went crumbling down after half a hundred hits from the ram. Through the rubble of the gate, the black-armoured enemy started pouring out, screaming wildly in their foreign tongue. The Valemen and Northmen attacking the gate met them, and the clang of steel meeting steel began rining incessantly.
Lord Alyn Corbray led the charge against the enemy, with Ser Keron Borrel at his side, they cut down defender after defender. Arrows sailed through the air, skimming past them with a rush of displaced air. Alyn jumped onto a piece of the fallen gate and found himself facing a large, beefy foreigner. The enemy held a three-headed flail, spinning it around above his head to gain momentum. He brought the three spiked balls down towards Alyn, who jumped back as they rushed at him. Landing badly, Alyn fell over backwards onto his back, and he was sure his attack would be on him in an instant. He scrambled to his feet just in time to see the man pulling the flail loose from where one of the spike's had lodged into the gate rubble.
The Gods are good today, he thought to himself, as he looked up for a quick moment at the ornately carved deities which stared down from above the gate. The enemy was spinning his flail again, and moving forwards against Alyn. Alyn ripped his own shield from his arm and threw at the man, and not waiting to see how effective it was he began charging. The shield caught the beefy man in the nose, and from the crack he heard under the din of battle he could tell it was broken. The foreigner snarled with anger, but had not yet even opened his eyes before Alyn forced his sword through the man's gut, impaling him. The man cried out and dropped the flail, but summoned the strength from somewhere to lay a mailed fist into Alyn's face. Alyn reeled back, letting go of his sword, and the man looked ready to keep attacking him, but he had only made two steps when he finally succumbed to his injury and he fell over forwards.
Alyn grabbed a sword and shield from the body of a dead man, and heard the order being called out by Lord Roland to press through into the city. He repeated the order to his own men, and now Ser Keron was back at his side. More men fell to their joint attacks as they pushed through the city, fighting to free the city street by street.
They came upon a large group of men, who charged them. Ser Keron dispatched the first with ease, smacking away the attacker's blade with all the finesse that the blade's holder didn't possess. Keron's sword then came swinging at his neck, lodging itself halfway through it. Alyn took the next man, feinting with a high attack then ducking low and hacking at the man's legs, cutting one of them off at the knee. The man fell to the ground screaming, and a Valeman was on him in a second to put him out of his pain. Koren and Alyn were already dealing with more opponents, as the wave of enemies continued. Alyn found himself trying to contend with three foreigners simultaneously, moving as quickly as possible to keep them from surrounding him. He side-stepped a halberd, swung around his enemy and pushed him into a second one, sending the two toppling to the ground, leaving him free to cut down the third, and the other two as they tried to stand.
Suddenly he realised that he had gotten seperated from Koren, he twirled around to see the old knight being surrounded by five enemies. He burst into a charge. Run! his thoughts screamed, as he headed in their direction faster! Get there in time!
He heard Ser Koren cry out as a halberd cut his arm deep. Koren lifted his sword, and sliced back at the man, cutting him near in half. He quickly tried to pull the sword out, but he didn't have time before the halberd plunged into his back and cut through his insides. He let out a coughing, spluttering noise, and fell to his knees. Alyn screamed, alerting the group he had just reached, running one of the foreigners through before he could turn around. He kicked another to the ground, and sliced the halberd of a third man in two, then put his sword through the man's chest. He just had time to twirl away from a jab from another man's halberd, then, pulling the outstretched halberd from the man's hand, he disarmed him and cut him down. The last man had already gotten up from the ground and run off, and the combined forces of the Valemen and Northmen were pushing through, moving past Alyn and Koren.
Alyn feel to his knees beside Koren, he stared disbelievingly at the old man's body. The man who had put his first sword in his hand, who had taught him how to use it. The man who had been a father to him. He felt an emptiness inside, his whole body felt numb.
Suddenly, he heard Koren's voice in his head, coming through as clearly and as gruff as the last time he had heard it.
What are you doing, boy? You have men to lead, a battle to help win. You can grieve when you survive it! he barked.
Alyn blinked rapidly, pushing back tears as he closed Koren's eyes, and used his sword to push himself back to his feet.
"Goodbye, Ser," he said weakly, as he turned around to rejoin the battle, the numbness in his chest allowing him to walk away from Koren's body.
