Darien Protects Himself

[The Stranger]

As they made camp that night, Darien went for a stroll among the Crownland men. Few as they were, there were some that he had gotten to know quite well and through them he had gotten to know so of the Westerland men. Finding a small group of Crownlanders sitting around a fire he took a seat next to them. “Good evening, men.” He said, then winked at the red bearded man he knew. “Ah, Stone.” The man replied as the others nodded to him. “Not much further to go until we get to King’s Landing, eh?” Darien nodded. “Listen, I have a small issue.” Darien said, getting to the topic as quickly as possible. “I fought beside you men and believe that I can trust you. Now, today I had a bit of an encounter with Cedric Lannister, and although there is nothing concrete about his intents, it can’t help to be suspicious.” He looked around carefully for a moment, before lowering his voice. “I know the lot of you have some friends among the Westerners, good friends. Talk to the ones that you trust the most and tell them to keep an eye on Cedric, looking out for anything suspicious he might do or say. And you four, I want you to keep an eye on me, on the road and in battle. Stay as close as possible without being too obvious or attracting attention to yourselves. Cedric and I are not on the best of terms, and although I doubt he will try and do anything to get rid of me, it won’t hurt to be careful. Understood?” Luckily, for his prowess in the battles at Deep Den, the men nodded. “There will be a reward for your work, if and when we get through this.” He then nodded to the bearded man, a fellow named Ethan, to follow him. The man got up and followed Darien over to a secluded area.

“Listen.” Darien said. “Under the cover of darkness I want you to take a horse and ride to Duskendale. Ride when everyone is asleep and sneak you way past the guards – I want no one to know that you have gone. Once you arrive at Duskendale, speak to a man named Yosz, who is a close friend of mine. Tell him to send out some of my whisperers to The Crag. I don’t care how they get in, disguised as a guardsman, servant or townsman, but I want to know if Dark Sister really is there, and how well it is protected.” Ethan looked a little taken back, but nodded. “It will be done. What shall I do when I have delivered this message?” Darien thought for a moment. “Wait at Duskendale until the whisperers send a message. Then come find me, if I am still alive that is. If not, find Brandon Royce, my cousin, and deliver him the message. I am counting on you, Ethan.” The man nodded again and the two of them went back to the fire.

Darien sat for a while longer with the men, enjoying a small meal and some ale, and then got up and said good night. It really couldn’t hurt to keep his eyes open.

Darien Stone sends a man to Duskendale, to deliver a message for Yozs to send whisperers to The Crag and find the location of Dark Sister, as well as how protected it is.
