As Dondarrion and Connington merged hosts they had but a moment to discuss before the massive army of the Green Basilisks rode out from the walls of Deep Den and towards the place they would have made their encampment.
The extremely talented general, "The Grand Viceroy" showed his talent as he held his own even against Dondarrion, the young Lord being quick on his feet and sending out clear orders fast. Dondarrion rushed between officers sending out orders and organizing the battelines while he deliberated with Connington between sword strokes. The Stormlands tested the strength of their new foe, and while they did not bleed the foreigners well enough to even the odds, they were still merely mortal and an equal number of their men well felled.
Further into the battle Dondarrion rode between lines, his voice growing shrill as he shouted at the top of his lungs over the storm of swords. His men were tired, and they weren't prepared enough for the fight immediately after they settled down. The invaders press forward even more and cut man after man down before they can be stopped by Dondarrion who brings his in a whole slew of reinforcements, cutting down foe after foe.
"FOR BLACKHAVEN! FOR NORA!", Dondarrion says as he briefly fights alongside his men, sending wicked swordstrokes at his enemies before falling back to the sides of his officers. The lines held and Dondarrion made a dent in the enemy position, but the other lines of his army were falling under the command of his lieutenants.
Dondarrion rode back further and consulted with his officers, debating a fake retreat.
"If we can retreat far enough, we can turn around and cut them down while they run", Dondarrion said wiping sweat from his brow as he lifted his visor momentarily.
"It's a risky move", Connington said, tapping the edge of his sword, "But if it's done right, it'll be a strong one. We don't have much of a shot if we can't pull something like this anyway."
Dondarrion nodded dutifully and said, "So we're settled then." He motioned to his officers who rode off to their posts. The Stormlands' lines moved to retreat, but after doing so many of them kept fleeing until Evander Storm rode back and united them, and the men turned to fight. But it was not enough, the sheer number was too much for Dondarrion's quick thinking and quick swordplay. The day was bloody and upsetting, but Dondarrion wouldn't let all hope be lost.
He ordered a full retreat and when the horns blew the Green Basilisk's army let them flee.
