Lord Dondarrion made the decision to force march the Stormlands' host when he decided it would risk more lives to do otherwise. He called for rotations of men to be allowed to sleep on wagons as to limit the hardships of the march. It was an admittedly tough one, and not all of his army were hardened soldiers. Many were young boys, younger than Dondarrion and with no experience in marching. They were the ones Dondarrion sought to give rest to while the others force marched. Some of the knights were told to offer up their horses to those who were not able to march so much, and also the most tired.
Dondarrion also sent word to Connington to have the Storm's End host force march, even faster than Dondarrion's had, which would have even more losses. Connington's host of 10,000 left Storm's End so fast and at such a pace as to blind some men.
Dondarrion's host though, marched longs nights and perhaps even longer days as they crossed in the Gold Road in impeccable timing and soon were on the hills that led up to Deep Den. They were crossed in the slowest timing, comparatively, but it had to be done as such or they would have suffered additional losses. Even then not everyone could be saved. Every man was given help when it could be allotted, but not always were such opportunities possible.
As they passed over the hills finally and were within sight of Deep Den they could see fires aplenty and the armies of the Green Basilisk which lay outside the keep. The men were given new courage as they knew what they meant to the others inside the keep.
Lord Dondarrion pressed his host to march even faster, resting for one day entirely before continuing at a slower pace. He then sent numerous ravens towards Deep Den delivering the same message, in hope that one would make it at least. He planned to press one section of the Green Basilisk army against the walls of Deep Den.
Dondarrion waited days more for Connington to arrive, and when several days later he did, the two hosts merged to form one of nearly 20,000 men. Here they were, here to save Deep Den.
Results:
Dondarrion's host camps beyond arrow range of the Basilisk host, and is met by Connington's well worn host.
The Stormlanders lose 1000 men from forced marching.
