The mountain range that lies between the Red Fork River and the Gold Road is long and wide, and part of a much larger network of ranges that cover the westerlands.

They had crossed the Red Fork a few days ago, and the march continued on tirelessly. Cerenna rode beside Lord Philip Lefford at the head of the column, her dusty brown rouncey plodding along dutifully beside Lefford's glossier, more powerful destrier. Cerenna was tired, but she was also watchful, and very much aware of Lefford by her side, though she did not show it.

"I find," said Lefford, "That with practice, you can sleep in the saddle, and not fall. It's a skill of battle they don't teach you when you are squiring." He looked over and grinned at the girl.

"I'm not tired, really," Cerenna said at once, jerking straight and shaking her head. "Though it shouldn't be hard to fall asleep on this old girl. I haven't seen you fall asleep in your saddle, though."

"Well, not getting caught at it is the second skill," Lord Phillip said with a laugh. "Anyway, we've got to keep pressing ahead, if we slow down for breaks we're going to arrive with the wrong kind of welcome."

"I rode here pretty fast, but I was alone. This is a big column to move," Cerenna said, twisting in her saddle to look around. She frowned, looking back up at the mountains. "There aren't bandits in there, are there?"

"Some times." Lefford said, "But they'll stay well away from anything like us. To many for any piddly bandits to mess with."

"But too few to make a real difference against those foreigners," Cerenna said, staring at the mountains. "There seems to be no end to them."

"Oh, nonsense. They'll never stand up to the full might of the Iron Throne." Lefford said, "King Rickon can call more than a quarter of a million men to his banner. Whether we live to see the victory day, I suppose, is another question."

"Who do you think these people are?"

"I don't know. The refugees we spoke to said they wore masks, isn't that what the people of Asshai do? I'm afraid I'm not one for world travels or old dusty tomes of legend neither."

"But they came from the west, not the east," Cerenna said, puzzled. "Isn't Asshai in the east?"

"I've heard it said the world is round. Maybe its not. As I said, I really don't know."

Cerenna laughed. "The world is round? That is the silliest thing I've ever heard. Imagine if you were on the side of the ball. You'd be like this." She leaned sideways in her saddle, perpendicular to the ground. "And if you were on the bottom, you'd fall off, or get dizzy in the head." She howled with laughter at the picture. "It's flat. You can't go east and come out west, that's just mad."

"So I told my maester, but he disagreed." Lefford said, with a smile, "I don't know where they came from, I only know where they are going."
