In her spare time, Aranya worked at devising a more sophisticated code of communication for her top agents in the Free Cities to communicate with each other, and separate, subtle and very distinct cipher for them to use with their spies within their cities. It ensured that nobody could creep into Aranya’s network, or get her information in anyway, and was one of her most important safeguards.
She continued to work towards gathering information regarding the Sealord and Braavos, and she soon was able to tell exactly who were his enemies and why, and when she identified them, she made extra efforts to befriend them. Her letters were warm, friendly, personal and flirtatious, but her offers of information and friendship were shrewdly calculating. Aranya began subtly encouraging the Sealord’s enemies to undermine his authority in different ways, challenging him in understated and restrained ways that saved them from outright enmity yet also began to silently, unobtrusively chip away at the Sealord’s power.
Information was streaming in, and Aranya tried to assemble it and make sense of it, to figure out Braavos’ standing in the world and the Sealord’s exact standing in Braavos. How could she use this information to weaken him further, both politically and personally, with his bravos?
Following indirect advice from Aranya, Sacharissa managed to get back into contact with Mara, the destitute girl who worked in the Palace kitchens. Sacharissa had a hold of blackmail over the girl and promised to feed her family in exchange for news. Sacharissa never met directly with the girl, but it worked and Mara began to relay information secretly from directly within the Sealord’s palace – the placement of guards, hours they stood watch, the exact hour when the guard changed, where the sixty-three slept, where everyone lived.
Aranya became an expert at being deceptive and close-mouthed in her letters without actually seeming to, and her persuasive powers grew as she manipulated the various agents that worked for her. She planned cautiously and carefully, continuing to expand her network. She spread through villages between the Free Cities, for she found that men of significance liked to meet in such places, fearing spies in the cities. The various brothels that Aranya owned not only brought in revenue, but also much priceless information about important persons – their opinions, their plans, their political inclinations, personal things and much more. Aranya was pleased. The information would prove invaluable to her, she felt.
With many of her agents, she did not use her real name, but contacted them indirectly, through other agents, or wrote with a false name and used fake seals of wax that she rather had fun devising herself. Her tracks were covered everywhere, and she saw to it that her network was secure and brought in news for her.
Result:
- Aranya gains Noteworthy Espionage
- Aranya gains Noteworthy Deception
