Aranya decided that it would be a good idea to build her network in other parts of the east too, most importantly the Free Cities. So she contacted her friends, and her sister’s friends, in Pentos – Magisters such as Qarho and his colleagues who had been Elane’s friends, as well as some of her own more humble associates who had nevertheless been very useful and important friends in their own ways.
I would appreciate it if you could keep your eyes and ears open for me, especially in matters concerning Sergyo Delinal, Aranya wrote. I will, of course, reciprocate with information and useful intelligence from Westeros. There was some information that she did not mind telling, and which could not hurt her or her husband or her King, much. The Magisters agreed to her deal. These were five Magisters who had been Elane’s friends, and they were the only five she trusted.
As for her more humble associates, she won them over with gold and personal appeals of friendship, and with promises of protection.
In Lys, she contacted the influential Razoon family, and introduced herself as an old friend of Falatir Razoon, who had regrettably died in Westeros, and whom she wanted to avenge by finding news of his murderer, who was somewhere in the Free Cities – she would be grateful for their help. She also hinted that Sergyo Delinal might have been involved, and asked that they keep their ears open for information about his affairs. She intended to keep an eye on him, she explained.
Her two agents in Pentos and Lys respectively were Lars and Velho, who spread their networks by spying first themselves, and then blackmailing people into working for them.
In Myr, her agent there was her only reliable friend, Lord Olsyrio, who had once been her lover. He received her letter quite warmly, and wrote flirtatious and funny replies of how her two marriages had broken his heart. Olsyrio told her that he already had a network in place throughout Myr, and that he would relay intelligence to her, especially about Sergyo Delinal, if she promised to give him a kiss one day and, of course, intelligence from Westeros.
In Norvos and Lorath, she spread agents more slowly, through channels opened by money and blackmail.
Back in Braavos, Morho and Sacharissa continued to expand their spy network. Sacharrisa bought a brothel near the Palace and enlisted the girls there as her spies, while Morho’s existing spies won over new ones. Sacharissa used the embarrassing secrets that her girls uncovered to blackmail some of the weaker clientele into acting as spies for her. They were all wealthy men, and useful.
