Alexander Irwyn’s gut turned as he was asked the question if he wanted to become the King’s Hand. The truth was he never had the desire; he simply wanted to return to Uplands and raise his two sons and his daughter. The Irwyn’s were not even a large House for the Reach and yet he was now being offered one of the most powerful positions in the Kingdom.
It was a shame the Hand could not remain in the Reach, Alex hated King’s Landing; he considered it a murky swamp filled with deceit and treachery and saw very little good ever coming from its blackness. Now he knew that the heart of the blackness would be him.
However, with Roland’s resignation he felt there were precious few others who could maintain the honor of the position, and when asked by the King, could not think of a single name. Alexander was not pleased with the decision the King made to restore the lands of the Martell’s. By all means spare the child’s life, Horas Blackwood had offered his son the same leniency but to restore their position for her life was fool hardy and would anger more men then not, especially when it was only a matter of time before the Whisper Network would close in on her and the Crow.
Perhaps it was upbringing as a Knight and Soldier that allowed him to look pass the decision. He was used to supporting decision’s that were not always the best. Give your charge the information, provide your council and if the fool goes against it, do what you can to minimize the damage. Alexander knew that there would be many issues that the King, Lord Regent and himself would disagree with, he made this clear with both of them that he would provide his honest council and tell them what they needed to hear but not necessarily what they wanted.
So as the momentous weight of the position began to dawn on him hours after his acceptance of the King’s offer, Alex did what he had come to do many times in the past few years. He prayed. He prayed to the Father for wisdom and to the Mother for patience. He prayed to the Crone to guide his decisions and to the Maiden to keep his thoughts pure. He prayed to the Smith to bless his plans and the Warrior to strengthen his axe hands as he had done on so many previous occasions. Finally he prayed to the Stranger and promised him the souls of those that would serve to harm the realm.
A shiver passed over his body as he returned from the Great Sept of Baelor, these next few years would be tumultuous, Alex thought, of course very few years had not been.
