Any feedback? Admins, any characters you want present for the hunt?
~~~~~~
The sky was bright blue but the air was crisp and biting. The Royces had few days left in King's Landing and somehow the place seemed less odious. The stink of sweat and sin that usually hung low over the city seemed broken up by the wind.
The ostlers had already saddled the horses and the hunting falcons had been brought to the Tower of the Hand. One last day to go hunting in the Kingswood, one last day before the long and slow trip north through mountain and vale.
The clan of Royces, Arryns and their retinue descended the tower stairs and climbed into the saddle. Rhodri son of Alyn was there, and Yohn son of Rhodri; the wildling cousin Aranya; Sara Lannister and the young knight Ser Roland Royce. Lilith Bettley, a Royce by birth and by soul joined them for the day, as well as Ser Jon Royce, riding his sleek, fox colored stallion.
The company was rounded out by some of Rhodri's favorite knights; Ser Galwyn Fell, the Stormlander who still rode as Rhodri's Captain, Ser Dortmund Grafton, the son of Dom the Sharp who taught Rhodri falconry, Lord Quinn Wydman, Lord Commander of the Vale Watch, Ser Casset Corbray, Rhodri’s cousin and childhood friend, and many more.
It was a perfect day for the hunt. Liltih produced a feast of fruit, basket after overflowing basket of luscious red raspberries, tangy stonefruit, and exotic citrus. Clearly her husband had no end of connections. Servants and pages stocked the hearths at the King’s Hunting Lodge, called the Stagsrest, while the hunters prepared to set out. Some had birds of prey, others longbows to hunt for venison. Aranya, desiring blood, brought her boarspear.
In a flash the corps of birds took to the air at once; goshawks, gyrfalcons, peregrines, and all other manner of hunting birds kept as prize possessions of the nobility. Rhodri's bird was a large, female goshawk, bright red bands on her tail; his sigil may now be blue, but Rhod's favorite color still was red. The falconers set off in every direction, following their birds. Yohn rode with Rhodri, too young to have his own bird. Rhodri removed the hood and the creature took to the sky, climbing higher and higher, seeking its prey.
Aranya rode with Sara Lannister and the archers, followed by wolfhounds instead of hunting hawks and falcons. Both were extremely skilled archers, and they contested each shot at every deer she aimed for, seeing whose aim was truer. Aranya smirked and said to Sara that they shoud leave the limp and lame animals for Jon to target. Jon had kept making irritating remarks through the hunt, and finally when Captain Snow slammed into Jon's stallion, Aranya decided it would be best if she rode a little apart from Jon.
Her two wolfhounds picked up a scent, and bounded off into the forest, away from the rest of the party. She rode hard after them, her black courser swift and sure-footed. She followed them for a long while, galloping with her spear at the ready. Finally she heard the hounds baying in the distance. Captain Snow charged into the clearing.
The two wolfhounds were tackling a wild boar. It was an enormous, hairy beast, with long, wicked tusks and more weight between hoof and shoulder than either of her large hounds. His small red eyes were gleaming, his tail twitching. Even as Aranya rode in, the boar gored one of her hounds with its tusk, killing it.
Aranya aimed her spear, put her heels to her stallion, and charged the boar. The boar turned to meet the charge, but as she expected, the second wolfhound used the distraction to attack the wild pig from behind. The boar squealed and turned instinctively, just as the large black courser rammed into it. Aranya's spear sank into the the boar's shoulder, drew out, and sank again. Although the hound's teeth had done little to the boar's leathery hide, the steel spear had pierced him.
Driven to a wild rage, the boar charged the wolfhound and the stallion, managing to gore the hound. Aranya continued to attack the wild pig with her spear, meeting its ferocity with shrewd cunning. Finally, she cut deep into its chest, and the wild boar was finished. Its dying squeals made Captain Snow rear, snorting.
When Rhodri’s bird-of-prey took to the air, Yohn went stone still. He dropped his reins, and the gelding he rode startled and bolted. Rhodri cursed and rode after the boy, completely losing sight of the bird. It could not be helped. Yohn's gelding was surprisingly fast, and much lighter than Rhodri's mount; it gamely galloped through rocky ravines, over twisted vines and downed trees. It took all of Rhod's skill as a rider to keep close. Yohn was still expressionless but somehow kept his saddle all through the chase.
Rhodri could not have told you how long he rode. He knew this stream and that, but did not have the time to slow and think on it, to realize how far they had gone. When finally Yohn's steed pulled up panting and foaming, they had gone leagues south of the Lodge, far from any of the other hunters. As Rhodri trotted into the glade, his own mount exhausted, Yohn turned and looked at him, eyes sharp and aware. The boy smiled. The goshawk was resting on Yohn's thin arm, talon against bare skin. A brace of rabbits was in Yohn's other hand.
Though Roland enjoyed a good boarhunt, he decided it was time for a break from excitement after his tumultuous first days in King's Landing and went to hunt stags. He left the main party armed with his favorite longbow and his longsword, and snuck off into the woods. He stalked quietly through the Kingswood looking for a good place to conceal himself. He smelled at the air but the wind was still and no scents abounded.
He stalked through the woods careful to avoid any of the small twigs or dried leaves that could give him away. He tried to remember everything the Hillfox had taught him about noticing the signs of the stag. He caught what he was looking for. Deersign- seeing an antler rub on the trunk of a tree, he looked around and saw that indeed there was a bed-down and a trail nearby. It was midday; the deer would return at dusk. He searched the area, and found a spot that would offer decent concealment. It's a long shot from here, but it'll have to do
He settled down to wait. Even with his effort at stalking the forest had known he was there, but as he sat still it forgot, and soon two squirrels played within feet of him unawares. The sun sank low in the sky and a small breeze filtered through the woods. He evaluated it and found that it would not betray him to his prey as it blew away from the trail. His quarry appeared, it was an older stag with a magnificent 10-point rack. One of the tines was broken, but this deer had been smart enough to survive until now. Roland drew the bow slowly while he breathed in, as he reached extension he began to exhale, pausing as he took aim. He released and the arrow flew true striking the deer behind its shoulder and destroying his lung and heart.
The stag bounded for about a hundred yards before falling. Roland allowed him time to die before moving to the carcass and carrying it from the woods, arriving at the party just after sundown.
*************
Hours later, when Rhodri and Yohn finally arrived at the hunting lodge walking their overwhelmed steeds, the rest of the company was already there relaxing, playing games of chance, and roasting rabbits, venison and boarmeat over the generous hearths. Ser Felwick Gower had inexplicably shown up with half a wagon’s worth of Stormland cider, and the servants served it warm and spiced. The party drank and danced and laughed and forgot their worries.
The men and women of Mountain and Vale toasted to Lord Jon's glory at the games, to Rhodri's new life at the Eyrie, to Ser Roland's appointment to Captain in the Vale Watch, and of course to Lilith's ascension to power through her husband.
None were told of Yohn's strange exploit.
I'm not sure about "other combat" as a category...what skills does Aranya currently have set? Where could we categorize the boar kill? She used a spear for that. That's basically what I meant by Other Combat - weaponry. And fighting from horseback, I guess. That seems really broad.
And btw, that is MONSTER of a scenario. It surpasses the Battle at Harrenhal by far.
About the same word count. Those are the only two scenarios I've written in word instead of the PM box.
Okay, I just looked at Aranya's current skills and she does have a category of "Archery/Other Combat". I'll go with that. Interestingly, she has no skill in riding, mounted combat, or anything related to horses. An oversight?
Related to Aranya's question about skills, I got rocked in the melee, but have mostly weapon skills, so I was wondering if I missed something as to how combat is resolved? Is there a combat skill or something to that effect, or do things like sword, shield, bow, and spear cover that?
A lot of it just comes down to the die roll. Your weapon skill gets added to a d100 roll; in something as general as a melee, they cull the first couple rounds by having a minimum threadshold you have to beat. Your roll didn't hit that threashold and you were gone. It's a lot of luck, especially for new characters who have to work their way up.
