"You are not her uncle, and there are forces other than the Sea Lord who would do her harm. You are not unaware of this." Her eyes were narrow, and bitter, as though he had deliberately forced her towards this argument.

"And who better to protect her then I?" Timm asked quickly.

"Anyone!" She shrieked, "I don't know if you had noticed, Timm, but there is not a single man I know who wouldn't rather have you dead, and most of them have armies."

Timm laughed, "You are correct, but notice that I am still alive. Do not worry about me Tristeza, no mere man can kill me."

Tristeza snorted, "I can count two I've slept with and one who'd like to fuck me--and those are just my intimate acquaintances. Benfry Smith could certainly kill you, and he would not mind it; the darling King-ling could have you beheaded any day before bed-time--I'm sure Aranya Royce could have it done if she were so inclined. Shall I go on?" she sneered, "This palace is what protects you, Timm, and your own general obscurity. If the Sea Lord were to turn against you--which you ae practically begging for--you would be left to dry. Dead within a week, or at best, killing yourself with liquor and cheap women."

Timm shook his head, "I am better then you realize Tristeza." He was calm as he continued, "And as long as she is in my life I do not need to drink, and she is the only girl for me."

"She is not your child! I am sorry, but her safety is more important than your sobriety." She shook her head, running her fingers anxiously through her hair, as she continued to pace. "You must stop seeing her."

Timm looked at Tristeza and sighed. "No. I am not your man. I have never been. And I have a new master now."

"A new master...?" she hissed incredulously at the absurdity of the claim, and then shook her head, refocussing; "You know I cannot allow you to jeopardize her well-being." she said--it was a simple statement of fact.

"Tristeza if I thought for one moment I my actions were going to hurt her I would slit my own throat." He smiled and reached out for her hand, "Trust me."

"What I know holds priority over what you think..." Tristeza muttered, barely aloud, and her eyes dropped to the floot, as he took her hands. Her mind was working at some conclusion, her brow furrowed with the concentrated effort. A shiver went down her spine, and when her eyes found his again, they were wet, but set in determination as they had not been before.
"You really love her." she said slowly, the words bringing the tears more with more urgency.

Timm smiled, "Of course. I would do anything for her." As he lloked into her eyes a tear welled in his own but he blinked it away.

"You would sacrifice anything for her safety," she said matter-of-factly, gazing intently into his eyes.

"If you don't already know that you are a bigger fool then Delinal." Timm replied hotly.

She blinked once, and her face looked peculiarly empty of expression as she stood on the balls of her feet, and her lips brushed his.
