His shift had just started, as he stalked the Red Keep's Halls.
"Oi,Trent!" a voice called out. 'Trent' turned to look at the man who called him. It was Tom, another man of the Kingsmen. "You might have been in some trouble, if I hadn't caught you. The password was just changed to 'Sharp' for this area. Best be on your way, or you'll have some explainin' to do," winked Tom. 'Trent' had always liked him, even if he had never showed it.
"Yeh, thanks," grumbled 'Trent', "See yeh," he said simply, as he went on his way.
He arrived at the gate of the Red Keep. It was his first time on shift here, as he had taken the shift for another man.
"Halt!" a voice said as he neared the tower at the gate. "Identify yourself," it came from behind.
'Trent' turned to see a badged officer, clearly a prominent member of the Kingsmen. "Aye... 'Sharp'. I'm Trent, I was assigned to this shift," he explained.
"Why is it I've never seen you around here before, Trent?"
"I'm new," was all he returned in a grumble.
"From what house do you call from?"
"Kettleback," he said shortly. The badged man approached, and looked carefully at his face, untrusting. 'Trent' stood there, staring him back in the eyes.
"Aye... only a Kettleback could as unflattering as you. Go, you are posted on the right side of the battlements. You will look over anybody entering or exiting the Red Keep, and give no lenience on security. Is this clear?" he stated, firmly.
He is quite rude, thought 'Trent'. "Aye."
It was dusk before his shift ended, and there was no activity at the gate. Perhaps tomorrow, thought 'Trent', as he exited his shift. As he was leaving, he made for his room in the secluded corner of the Keep, hidden from plain sight.
He changed out of his uniform, and back into his comfortable cloak. Pulling up the hood, he exited the room. Upon reaching the spot on the wall which was watched least, to his experience, he scaled it, and climbed down the other side, in foot holes both natural and man made. He touched the dirt, and began walking a few yards, trees growing to his left, the Keep's wall to his right. Upon reaching the main road, he made his way south, only to be stopped by a Gold Cloak halfway down Aegon's Hill.
"Oi, what were ye doin' up at the castle?" he asked suspiciously. That be off limits to peasants at the time. Now, what was yer business?"
"Well, come over here, and I shall show you," Velyn responded, gesturing towards a dark alley. "The goods I was offering to a Lord was denied today, though you may have them if you wish."
The Gold Cloak unsheathed his sword, hesitant. "Don't try anythin'," he warned, walking over to the dark alley.
"Where be these goods?" the Cloak asked curiously, walking deeper into the alley in front of Velyn. "Right here," Velyn whispered. As the guard turned, he caught a dagger in the eyeball, killing him instantly. On the end of the black-steel dagger, a red ribbon was attached with the words 'Valar Morghulis' inscribed.
